3. GLC CAFÉ: SUMMER EDITION

The weekly GLC café is offered every Thursday when VT is open. Summer café may be on the West Patio when the weather is nice, complete with a game of cornhole or giant Jenga. Enjoy free coffee, tea and cookies and the occasional fresh lemonade or other surprises in the company of your grad student friends and colleagues. Relax, network, meet new people, join a game of corn hole or jenga.
4. LCI SEEKS PEER COLLABORATORS – 1st posting
The VT Language and Culture Institute (LCI) is seeking peer collaborators to interact with Fellows from the Mandela Washington Fellowship. Fellows are ages 25-35 and the purpose of the peer collaborator is to provide each Fellow with the opportunity to get to know about the life of someone in the U.S. who is close to their age, and to share experiences. The only requirement is to commit to meet at least once to have a conversation with one or more of the Fellows. Then, you can meet again if you like, or attend one or more of the social events throughout the summer. The ideal is to meet with the partner once weekly during the 6 weeks the Fellows are here, but that doesn’t always work with schedules. The Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Virginia Tech Student Chapter is currently organizing an event as part of the 5th International Symposium on Naturalistic Driving Research in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). 6. LOCAL HOSTS SOUGHT FOR SAUDI COLLEGE STUDENTS FOR JUL 29-31 – 2nd posting
Graduate students are invited to apply to host Saudi college students who will visit Virginia Tech for a week of programs related to community engagement and social entrepreneurship. Students spend 1 week in DC, 1 week on campus, and 1 week back in DC before returning home to Saudi Arabia. Hosts are only sought for the weekend of July 29-31, the rest of the week the Saudi students will stay on campus. 8. GRANT APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED IN CTR FOR PEACE STUDIES AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION – 3rd posting
The CPSVP will provide support for graduate students whose thesis or dissertation research applies to issues of violence, with funded activities leading to the completion of a thesis or dissertation. Recipients are required to participate in various university-sponsored research conferences and professional conferences appropriate for their field of study. Proposals must address thematic research areas related to the study and prevention of violence, with special interest in the research of the causes, consequences, treatment, management, and/or prevention of violence. Research can focus on issues of violence at the individual, family, organizational, community, institutional, or societal level. Three awards available ranging $1,000-$1,500. Proposals are welcome from students in all VT departments, centers, and programs. Funded students must be full-time graduate students in good standing, and the research/scholarship is expected to be grounded in the social sciences, humanities, or arts. The Department of English is seeking applications for GTAs for 2016-17 to teach in the First-Year Writing Program. Applicants must have completed at least 18 hours of graduate work in English or a related discipline to qualify. Appointed students must enroll in 12 hrs of graduate credit per semester, 3 of which should be practicum credits; must also participate in English department’s GTA mentoring program, which includes required activities before the semester begins. 17. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR SURVEY ON TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION IMPLEMENTATION – 1st posting
Graduate students are invited to complete a survey by June 25 (sooner is better) on factors contributing to the successful implementation of technology innovations. This field study data is part of a dissertation research into the conditions that facilitate the implementation of instructional innovations, like Canvas. The survey contains 49 short statements, and a short set of demographic questions at the end; it should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Grad students are invited to participate in a study about a wearable exoskeleton. Participants will be asked to perform simulated assembly tasks (e.g., manual drilling and wiring), both with and without the upper-extremity exoskeleton. Two experimental sessions (~3-4 hour long) are required to complete the study. Compensation: $10/hour.
