2. GRAD MINDFULNESS

Meets every Tuesday (change from last semester.) At each meeting there will be a short guided mindfulness exercise followed by time to practice on your own. You don’t need to stay for the whole time. 3. WELLFEST 2018 – STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIR

11. VIRGINIA TECH LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD (ISAB) – 1st posting
The newly-created ISAB will represent the needs and concerns of the international student community at Virginia Tech by providing a forum for international students to give feedback on initiatives, programs, policies, and services that impact international students. The Graduate Student Assembly is looking for bevy of volunteers for our upcoming Cross-Campus Spring Beer & Wine Social. These socials would not happen without volunteers and, as a token of appreciation for your altruism, you’ll receive FREE entry (which means FREE food), FREE drink tastings, and THREE full drink tickets. 15. COMMUNITY CHANGE ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS – 1st posting
Community Change, an online, peer-reviewed, graduate student-run journal at Virginia Tech that explores multiple approaches to democratic community development and change, is accepting submissions for its second issue. Soliciting scholarly articles (4,000-6,000 words), book reviews (1,000-1,500 words), multimedia, and artwork that analyze responses to the evolving political and social landscape since the 2016 election. Might include, but not limited to: 1) explorations of new initiatives, on-going activism, and community organizing and how they have changed their work since 2015 campaign and 2016 election; 2) historical movements and groundwork that has informed current responses; 3) pieces reflecting on tactics and strategies employed to resist, counter, and educate about xenophobia, white supremacy, and other ideologies or political doctrines. Also inviting submissions that engage more broadly with contemporary themes of agency, democracy, and community change. Submission deadline is January 26, 2018. 16. JEAN B. DUERR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN STUDENTS – 2nd posting
The Jean B. Duerr Memorial Fund awards scholarships to women who plan to attend, or are already enrolled in, an accredited college or university for the entire 2018-2019 academic year. Awards of $2,000 will be given to those applicants who best demonstrate academic achievement and community service. An eligible candidate will be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum grade point average of 3.6. A full official transcript must be included with the application. Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2018 for scholarships awarded for the 2018/2019 academic year.  Please note that no applications, including those with March 1, 2018 postmarks, will be accepted after March 5, 2018. BIOL 5174: Work/Life Balance in Academia (1 credit; CRN 19073), will be offered spring 2018 by Dr. Lisa Belden (belden@vt.edu).  This discussion-based graduate seminar will meet Tuesdays from 1230-130 and will address some of the challenges facing academics as we try to balance our academic positions with other important life responsibilities.  We will be primarily discussing family-related issues, although most of the topics we will cover apply broadly to “life” outside of work.  This course can be applied to the elective requirement for the future professoriate certificate.

THEATRE AUDITIONS FOR BICYCLING PLAY

“The Right of Way,” a new documentary play sourced from interviews, memorializes a young bicyclist who was struck and killed by a speeding motorist. Using video and spatial audio, this immersive production will look at the evolution of our city streets over the last century. Performances will be in the Cube at the Moss Arts Center, March 29-31. GSA SPRING BEER & WINE SOCIAL

Join the Graduate Student Assembly for a cross-campus mixer, with students from the National Capital Region (NCR), Roanoke, and Blacksburg campuses. Tickets will be $12 ahead of time — $15 at the door — and each ticket will come with five tastings and three full drinks (where a full drink is equivalent to a 5 oz. glass of wine or a 12 oz. beer). There is also a non-alcohol-drinking entry option, which is $5 at the door. Online tickets will go on sale two weeks before the event.
