Conversations about equity, inclusion, and diversity almost always start with the “what” of these issues that affect higher education settings on a regular basis. But what about the “how to”? What is it about these conversations that intimidate people and how to go about starting these conversations among ourselves without feeling like an imposter or feeling incompetent? 13. COMMUNICATE YOUR SCIENCE! BE A RESEARCH À LA MODE PRESENTER – 2nd posting
Research a la Mode is a monthly venue for graduate students from different departments to come together and hear a talk by one of their peers. They are currently looking to fill speaker slots for Fall 2018.The main idea is to give graduate students an opportunity to practice communicating their research to an audience that is unfamiliar with their discipline in order to cut down on reliance on jargon and to simplify and clarify their presentation skills. RALM aims to help graduate students become better teachers, researchers, and communicators. 14. GSA CAP AND GOWN PROGRAM – 2nd posting

If you are participating in commencement ceremonies this spring, you are eligible to borrow a graduate cap and gown from GSA for a small fee of $10. This fee helps with cleaning costs, so that we can keep providing you with this cheaper cap & gown alternative in the future. The lottery will open Wednesday, April 4, and close Friday, April 20. Those chosen in the lottery will be notified no later than Friday, April 25. Note that all gowns will have been dry cleaned and steamed, and caps have been disinfected. 15. APPLICATIONS INVITED FOR GRAD HONOR SYSTEM CHIEF JUSTICE POSITION – 2nd posting
The Graduate Honor System is searching for a new chief justice for the 2018-19 academic year, starting summer 2018. Applicants must be: (1) a graduate student in good standing who has been in residence for a minimum of one semester; (2) able to serve as Chief Justice for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus. Preferably applicants should have experience as a GHS investigator, facilitator or panelist. 22. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: STUDY WITH AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) TECHNOLOGIES – 1st posting
The Center for Human-Computer Interaction is currently conducting a study examining to investigate how future AR interfaces should be. The study will make use of state-of-the-art AR technologies such as the Microsoft HoloLens. Participants will be asked to perform physical actions, such as walking and drawing, and tasks in AR such as reading, and moving windows. Participants will be asked for their comments and preferences about different interaction alternatives. The entire experimental session will take about one hour. Participation is voluntary and confidential. For more information please contact Wallace Lages:  wlages@vt.edu.

23. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO TEST ASSESSMENT INSTRUMENT – 1st posting
Participants will complete a two part assessment and an exit questionnaire. The instrument will assess the ability to evaluate the research of others and to make decisions mimicking those that might arise in the participant’s own research. The length of completion is estimated at no more than 60 minutes. Participants will receive $5 for completion of Part 1, $5 for completion of Part 2, and $5 for exit interview. 24. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR STUDENT EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CONFERENCE
Volunteers are need needed to help with the inaugural Student Experiential Learning Conference on Friday, April 13, 8:30am-4:30pm in the Squires Student Center and Moss Arts Center. This conference will showcase VT-shaped learning through a celebration of the work of our Virginia Tech undergraduate students of all years and majors on projects and experiences that demonstrate purpose-driven experiential learning. This is a great opportunity for graduate students to gain professional conference experience as a volunteer. 25. SEEKING PARTICIPANTS FOR FOCUS GROUPS ON VT WEBSITE DESIGN – 1st posting
Students/Faculty/Staff and Alumni are invited to participate in a focus group centered on the pending design and implementation of Virginia Tech’s main web presence, vt.edu. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VIRTUAL REALITY INTERACTION STUDY – 2nd posting
Volunteers needed for a user study in the project “Object Manipulation in Virtual Reality” at the Moss Arts Center.   Participants will play an interactive virtual reality (VR) game that’s built upon the latest VR technology, including head-mounted display and hand tracking input devices. The entire session should take around 80 minutes. The participants will also be filling out a pre-questionnaire about their familiarity with computers, video games etc. Study is open to anyone 18+ with normal vision and normal range of arm/hand motion. Participation is entirely voluntary and the experiment can be terminated at any time for any reason. 28. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR A WALKING STUDY – 2nd posting
This study is evaluating a new data collection device and requires two 45 minute visits located in Norris Hall. In each visit participants will be asked to complete three walking trials at your own preferred walking speed. You must a healthy adult aged 18-30. 29. SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR NATIONAL BIOMECHANICS DAY – 2nd posting
National Biomechanics Day (NBD) is a celebration of biomechanics principles, research, and innovation across the United States and around the world. This year, NBD at Virginia Tech will take place from 9:30am – 1:40pm on April 11, 2018 and we are looking for volunteers to help with the event in morning, lunch, and afternoon shifts! We will have approximately 90 high school students coming to campus to participate in hands-on activities hosted by labs in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics, Industrial Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. 30. VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE REGULAR MILK CONSUMERS SOUGHT FOR STUDY – 3rd posting
The Department of Food Science and Technology Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (FST SEL) is conducting a study that investigates the effect of LED color temperature on consumer’s choice of milk packaging. In this test, you will be asked to select one milk packaging that you prefer from retail cases with different LED color temperature and complete one demographic survey. The sensory session will last approximately 5-10 minutes. Sessions will occur in the pilot plant (first floor) in HABBI (Human & Agricultural Biosciences Building I). For each participant, snacks (cookie, chips, candy, popcorn, fruit, and drinks) will be offered as compensation and appreciation for participation. Participation is limited to those 18 years of age and regular milk consumer (purchase milk at least once every two weeks). The participation is voluntary and confidential; you may withdraw at any time without penalty. Questions? 31. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR RESEARCH ON CARDIAC ACTIVITY – 3rd posting
Participants are requested for a laboratory study examining cardiac activity and perception. The single session in Williams Hall 158 involves collection of non-invasive psychophysiological measures (using EKG, 2 blood pressure finger cuffs, respiration belt) during standard laboratory tasks (questionnaires, heartbeat tasks, watching two brief non-stimulating videos, & a 5-minute speech in lab). Total duration: about 1 hour 15 minutes. Inclusion criteria: (determined by brief online VT Qualtrics screening) Age 18-24; No major health condition; No smoking/nicotine within the past year. Compensation: Automatic entry into random drawing for one of two Visa gift cards ($50 or $25). Chances of winning: 1 in 37. BLACKSBURG BLOCKCHAIN SYMPOSIUM

11TH ANNUAL BOB DUNCAN MEMORIAL 5K

DIVERSITY ART SHOW

PhD student Tacie Jones invites artists from all cultural backgrounds to display or perform their work. The theme for this pop-up event is “how do you feel the media has depicted your race or ethnicity?” Looking for work in all visual and performing art mediums; doesn’t have to be new. Will accept any work related to racial justice. Artists will retain all rights to their work and can list the exhibition on their resume. To help coordinate the display and performance line up, artists should do one of the following by Apr 18 – 1) For performance: email a description of performance-based equipment needs; 2) For digital art: share an uploaded file of digital work and email equipment needs; 3) For visual artworks: drop off physical work at the Media Building, Room 201, on Wednesday April 18th between 10am-4pm. Will also have space set up for conversation and community boards where people from all backgrounds can share their experience with racial bias and talk about ways to raise awareness and promote change. 59TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL STREET FAIR!

Grad student Jeena Mary Sajimon invites you to come see what it would be like to experience 30 countries in one day. Learn about customs and traditions from International Students here at Virginia Tech while you watch skillful dancers transport you to countries with music and beautiful traditional wear. There will be interactive presentations, a Global Fashion Parade, traditional games, arts, crafts, and other items available for purchase from the students. Kids can visit the Global Kids booth sponsored by the Blacksburg Children’s Museum and make a fun passport for traveling at the fair! Be sure to taste the delicious food provided by an assortment of food trucks.

TIE-DYE AND TACOS WITH THE GRADUATE FELLOWS

Take an afternoon break with the Graduate Fellows to enjoy delicious tacos and create a tie-dye masterpiece. Tie-dye materials will be provided, but please bring your own shirt (or other garment). Please only bring one item to tie-dye to ensure that as many people as possible can join in on the fun. Tie-dye works best with white cloth, but lightly colored material may work okay too. BIOBUILD SYMPOSIUM

The first BioBuild Symposium being held April 26 in the Holtzman Alumni Center. GLC HIKE TO THE CASCADES

The hike is approximately 4 miles (2 hours) round-trip with the potential of extending the trip to include Barney’s Wall based on interest. READING DAY YOGA AND HIKE

Venture Out is leading a trip on reading day called Reading Day Yoga and Hike for anyone to sign up and take a break right before finals begin. The trip fee is $15 and that includes transportation, yoga and a mat, hike, and morning tea. Plan to meet at the Venture Out House on Roanoke St. at 7:45 am and return around 2:00 or 3:00pm.
