7. THE VMCVM ONE HEALTH WORKING GROUP HOSTS GUEST SPEAKER

The VMCVM One Health Working Group hosts Jennifer Cromwell, the Assistant State Director for the USDA Wildlife Services program in Virginia, who will be giving a talk titled “Rabies in Wildlife and the USDA Oral Rabies Vaccine Program in Virginia”. 10. RESEARCH A LA MODE: EXPLORING INSIGHTS ON WILDLIFE RECREATIONISTS

Research a la Mode is a monthly venue for graduate students from different departments to come together and hear a talk by one of their peers. This month PhD student Bennett Grooms, who studies the thoughts and behaviors of wildlife recreationists in Virginia, will share his insights on how things like motivations, trust, and attitudes are important for wildlife conservation. Grad student Adetoun Yeaman invites graduate students and their families to a family day arts and crafts event “From HeArt to HeArt”. Artists who are passionate about creativity will be at the event to instruct participants at various art stations in making creative and simple art projects.  Proceeds from the event go towards childrens’ education in Kenya. The art projects created at the event will also be mailed to each of the 21 students in Kenya. Registration fee is $10. The Whole Tale (WT) project, in cooperation with the US region of the Research Data Alliance (RDA/US) and its early career fellowship program RDA/US Data Share, invites applications for the joint WT-RDA/US Early Career fellowship program. 18. SCRIBE/PROCTOR NEEDED – HONORARIUM PROVIDED – 1st posting
A student with a disability is in need of a scribe/proctor for the GRE paper test to be administered at Virginia Tech SSD Office, 310 Lavery Hall, Blacksburg. Time commitment is about 4 hours per day, for 3 days, starting at 12:45pm on October 10, 11 and 12, 2018 (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). An Honorarium of $246.00 is provided by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Prefer a VT graduate student with personal experience taking the GRE within the last 5 years. In English, must have neat, legible handwriting and ability to write effectively and efficiently dictated information for the individual for completion of all sections of GRE test. 19. VT-ASL (AUDITORY SYSTEMS LAB) SEEKS PARTICIPANTS FOR 2 EXPERIMENTS – 1st posting
(1)  4 participants (2 male and 2 female) for an earplug test: New participants will go through a approx.. 1 hour screen/qualifying session to test your hearing level, similar to audiogram testing done at doctor’s office. If qualified and willing to continue, participants will be asked to schedule up to 2 one hour test sessions. During each hour, hearing (low sound level) will be measured with and without earplugs. Task will be sitting in a quiet room and listening to the lowest sound level detectable.
(2) 10 participants (5 female and 5 male) for an auditory localization experiment: For this experiment, you will be asked to sit in a center of a speaker array and guess the location of sounding speaker.  The sound level will not be high.  The whole experiment will take 10-12 hours and you will be scheduling about 1 hour per day.

The Graduate Student Ambassador Leadership (GSAL) Program seeks applicants looking for a way to be more engaged as a graduate student and looking to serve and represent Virginia Tech. 21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VR INTERACTION METHODS STUDY – 2nd posting
This research is studying various interaction methods for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies and investigating the best ways to indicate and mark targets of interest in AR.

22. MENTORS NEEDED FOR BLACKSBURG REFUGEE PARTNERSHIP – 2nd posting
Grad student Allison Miller, co-coordinator of The Blacksburg Refugee Partnership (BRP), advises that the BRP is seeking mentors for refugee children in the community. Mentors spend a minimum of one day a week with their mentee engaging in activities that will build on their community involvement and contribute to their overall well-being. This may be taking the mentee to the park, doing arts and crafts, hiking, and more. This is a unique opportunity to get involved with BRP and space is limited. There are no language requirements and all those who are interested must pass a background check. It is preferred that mentors have a minimum of one year left in Blacksburg. 23. PAID VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS AGES 7-14 – revised posting
The Clinical Psychology program at Virginia Tech has developed an assessment training opportunity for doctoral students. Graduate students enrolled in the Psychological Assessment course will be conducting psychological assessments of children/adolescents, ages 7-14, and their parents. Volunteers will be reimbursed $30 for their participation. These assessments are only for training purposes, not for clinical use, but participants will receive a summary of findings.
