5. GLC CLOSED FOR POWER OUTAGE – 1st posting

The GLC will be closed Wednesday afternoon due to a building-wide planned power outage so that electrical work can be completed.

6. CAP AND GOWN PROGRAM FOR FALL 2020 PHOTO OPS – 1st posting
Wondering where to get a cap and gown to borrow for picture opportunities to commemorate your graduation? Stop by the GLC – Graduate School staff will be happy to help you borrow one of GSA’s cap and gown sets for those important moments. Be sure to have them dry-cleaned before you return them – receipts will be required! You can pick up a masters/doctoral gown and cap Monday- Friday, 12/14-12/18 from 10am-12:00pm in 120 GLC. You will need to call 540-231-4558 for assistance. Same location and process goes for returns, which will be held on Monday, 12/21from 9:00-12:00, 120 GLC; alternative drop offs can be arranged with prior notice if unable to return in December. 7. SAIG SPRING 2021 NEW SHORT COURSE OFFERINGS – 1st posting
The Statistical Applications and Innovations Group (SAIG) is offering 2 new short courses during the spring 2021 semester. SAIG provides free courses to members of participating VT Colleges to make you a more effective researcher. Do you need to analyze your data and aren’t sure where to start? 8. “THE MARKET” SIGN UP OPEN FOR SPRING SEMESTER – 1st posting
The Market is designed to provide food assistance to students who, for whatever reason, have a hard time obtaining regular, healthy meals. The program offers bags of seasonal produce and fruits; options for beef, poultry, and vegetarian protein; dairy items; dry-goods pantry stock items; and bonus treats. Each weekly bag will be enough for roughly seven days’ worth of meals. The web site will open for orders on Jan. 11 and the first pick-up will be Jan. 19. The program will run 16 weeks. 9. CONTRIBUTIONS NEEDED FOR SYMPOSIUM ON MASS INCARCERATION – 1st posting
2020 has been marked by COVID-19, racial injustice and inequality, and numerous challenges for those in our nation’s prisons and jails as well as family and friends of the incarcerated. The symposium is an opportunity to have your voice heard and express how you have been impacted by incarceration in the midst of this tumultuous year. 11. INTERDISCIPLINARY COMMUNITY CHANGE JOURNAL SEEKING GRADUATE STUDENT EDITORS – 2nd posting
Community Change journal (https://www.communitychange.ipg.vt.edu/) is an online,
peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary graduate student journal that seeks to explore multiple approaches to democratic community development and change. Community Change aims to provide opportunities for graduate students from all related disciplines to become acquainted with academic publication processes, including crafting calls for papers, soliciting manuscripts, and reviewing submissions through a peer-review process. Accepted submissions are published open access on the journal’s website. Students with editing and publishing experience are preferred, and/or those who can commit a minimum of two academic years. 13. HUME CENTER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR CYBER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2021/22 – 3rd posting
The Hume Center for National Security and Technology is now accepting applications for the DoD Cyber Scholarship Program for the 2021-2022 academic year. Students selected as DoD Cyber Scholars will receive full cost of tuition, books, required fees, laptop, and stipend to cover room and board. Selected students will also be adjudicated for a security clearance.  Stipend level is $30,000 for graduate (Master’s/PhD) students. Disabled students may receive additional allowances. 14. RESEARCH AND GRADUATE STUDIES GRADUATE ASSISTANT POSITIONS -3rd posting
The Department of Research and Graduate Studies (RGS) in the College of Engineering is seeking 3 full-time graduate assistants for Spring 2021. This positions are 20 hrs. week with a pay scale of 13. The responsibility of the graduate assistants is to provide support for the activities and initiatives of the RGS office. The positions will focus on assisting with the development, implementation and administrative support of the office’s duties to grow research and graduate studies programs. The positions include collecting data for specific tasks, and special events and supporting the office’s portfolio of Canvas modules and co-curricular activities. 15. PARENTS AND THEIR 7-11 YEAR-OLD CHILDREN NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
We are working with families both in the US and China to understand children’s social development and family interactions. To follow public health guidelines for social distancing, parents and children may complete this study in the comfort of your home, with no face-to-face contact with us. The study involves parents completing online questionnaires and uploading audio recordings of parent-child joint activities: A) talk with each other about events that made you or your child feel angry, proud, shame/guilt, and warmth; and B) read a wordless book together. Questionnaires will take about 30 minutes and parent-child activities will take about 45 minutes. Parents will be given a $20 e-giftcard and children will be given a wordless picture book and a sticker sheet. Interested? e-mail danhuaz@vt.edu.

16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR REMOTE STUDY ON USER STUDY ON A SEARCH AND RESCUE WEB APPLICATION – 2nd posting
We are looking for participants to test the effectiveness of a system design to aid Search and Rescue professionals in search management and visualizing lost person travel patterns. The experiment will be conducted through the online meeting software (zoom). You will be asked to complete an online search and rescue planning exercises using a browser on your computer. During the experiment, the screen will be recorded. You will be asked to complete questionnaires. The experiment will take approximately 1 hour to complete. You will be compensated at $10 for your time by amazon gift card once completed. The research protocol for this experiment is approved by the Virginia Tech Institutional Review Board (IRB #18-624). Eligible participants are current Virginia Tech students 18 years of age or older, with normal or corrected to normal vision. 17. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY EXAMINING HOW CHOLINE INTAKE INFLUENCES HEALTH – 2nd posting
This study will require 5 visits to the lab, multiple finger sticks to measure glucose and wearing a continuous glucose monitor for several days, consumption of a supplement or placebo at 4 time points, and a time commitment of approximately 12 hours.  Participants must be 18-65 years of age, not taking medications that influence the study results, not have severe obesity, non-smokers, not pregnant, without any major medical problems, and without any known choline allergies. If you are on a diuretic or are taking medications such as aspirin, antibiotics, prebiotics, and probiotics, you are not eligible for this study. You will receive information on your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other health information.  You may receive up to $100 to compensate you for your time. You will receive $20 for completing session 2, session 3, and session 4. After completing session 5 you will receive $40. There is no compensation for completing the first session. 18. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A COMPUTATIONAL THINKING PRACTICE STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants must be 18 years of age and older to participate in this 5 to 50 minute study session online. During this session, you will be asked to complete a few brief surveys and to test a way of practicing computational thinking. You will need a computer with a web browser and speakers/headphones. Each participant who completes 90% or more of the research study will be eligible to receive a $10.00 digital gift card from www.amazon.com. Participation is confidential and completely voluntary. 19. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON THE USE OF HEAD-WORN AR FOR HISTORICAL TOURS – 3rd posting
We are looking for participants for our study on head-worn augmented reality for historical tours. The study takes place in two sessions, a 40-minute session at Solitude, located near the Duck Pond, and a 20-minute interview session held over Zoom. Additionally, participants will fill out online questionnaires before and after the session at Solitude. You may qualify for this research if you are at least 18 years old, have normal corrected (glasses and/or contacts) or uncorrected vision, and have strong English skills.
