It is said that the thought of public speaking is more frightening to many people than death. In this Pinch-of-Practice workshop participants use role-play and improvisation to begin to develop the self-confidence and audience awareness required to deliver presentations that have memorable impact. Come learn a few relaxation techniques, develop awareness of the many ways in which we communicate, turn off your inner critic, and have fun! Open to Virginia Tech graduate students and faculty. 3. FIWGSA 2021 BIOBLITZ
March 17-April 26
The Fish & Wildlife Graduate Student Association (FIWGSA) is hosting a virtual BioBlitz competition this spring for people to get out into nature and identify a bunch of different critters (flyer here)! Teams of up to 3 people will use the iNaturalist app to log different critter observations. FIWGSA 2021 BioBlitz iNaturalist page found here. To register a team, fill out this form here, and teams can be registered until April 16th. Registration Fee – $10 per person. Cash prizes for teams with the most collective observations and teams with the most of a single taxa group (Birds, Herps, Mammals, Plants, Fish, and Invertebrates) get custom taxa stickers. Specialized language and detailed explanations can be very useful within disciplinary groups. Jargon can save us a lot of time when we are talking to those who understand it, but too much complexity or in-group language can exclude the people we most need to connect with. The Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS) is excited to announce a speaker panel event called “Routes to Transportation”. Our panel includes prominent women leaders from different areas in transportation (government, policy/advocacy, academia, and industry). We aim to showcase how multi-faceted transportation is, and the different routes students can take to be involved in transportation. Each panelist will describe their own paths that led them to their current role and answer some questions for the first portion of the event. 14. GRADUATE STUDENT FACILIATORS NEEDED FOR HOKIE WELLNESS INITIATIVE – 1st posting
FEELS (Facilitating Effective Emotional Learning & Support) is a team of trained graduate-level students within Hokie Wellness who facilitate educational workshops and outreach about mental health and emotional well-being. The goals of the FEELS team are to normalize mental health struggles and to help students learn resiliency skills to care for their emotional wellness. FEELS is recruiting graduate students of all majors / programs of study for the 2021-2022 academic year. FEELS members engage with topics such as effective self-care / coping, growth mindset, supportive self-talk, interpersonal skills, assertive communication, & cognitive distortions. FEELS members gain personal and professional development on mental health skill building, public health approaches, program development and assessment, facilitation / leadership skills, & more! Most importantly, FEELS members get to engage the Virginia Tech community in a fun, interactive, empathetic, & creative way! The Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) is opening the call for applications for the Executive Board positions in the GSA. The GSA represents the graduate student body of Virginia Tech. The elected officials will lead the organization’s operation, advocacy, and initiatives during the 2021 Calendar year. The 6 Executive Board positions, their primary duties, and responsibilities are detailed in the Candidate Application Package. 20. CHILDREN AGED 3-4 AND THEIR PARENTS OR PRIMARY CAREGIVERS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY – 1st posting
The Children’s Emotions Lab in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at VT is looking for preschool-aged children (3-4 year old children) and both their parents to participate in a new research study focusing on parenting behaviors and children’s emotions. To accommodate the current public health crisis, parents will be sent questionnaires about their own and their children’s behaviors and emotions. Families will also have the opportunity to participate in a follow-up Zoom call where parents will be asked to talk to their child about a time when they were happy and a time when they were upset. ASPECT PhD candidate Sara Wenger is seeking participants to complete a short survey as part of her 2021 Diversity Scholars project. The purpose of this survey is to assess how Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff are feeling in the wake of remote learning and meetings on Zoom for nearly a year now. The results of this survey will be presented at the Diversity Scholar showcase hosted by the Virginia Tech Office of Diversity and Inclusion on May 7 from 12:00-1:30PM. Researchers from the Mind Music Machine Lab and Dr. Rafael Patrick are conducting research on pedestrian safety for VT students. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EMOTION REGULATION AND EVALUATIONS OF LEADERS RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
You’re invited to participate in a dissertation study examining the impact of emotion regulation on evaluations of leaders. This is an online Zoom/Qualtrics study that will last about 50 minutes and you’ll receive a $10 Amazon gift card as compensation. During the session, you will watch a Pollock documentary and scenes from the TV show “The Office” and may be asked to regulate your emotions as you watch these videos. This part of the study will be video-recorded on Zoom. Then you will watch more videos of a leader and business managers and answer some surveys related to what you have watched. 24. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF RISK INDICATORS AND THEIR VISUALIZATION OF OUTAGE SCHEDULES – 3rd posting
We are recruiting participants to evaluate a web-based application that visualizes risk and tracks scheduling in outages of nuclear power plants. The experiment will be conducted in Whittemore 529. You will be compensated at $15 for your time (~75 mins total). The research protocol for this study is approved by VT IRB No. 18-825. This study is funded by the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) of the Department of Energy. Eligible participants are current Virginia Tech students 18 years of age or older, with normal or corrected to normal vision. 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VIRTUAL REALITY RESEARCH STUDY – 3rd posting
The Virginia Cognitive System Engineering Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking students to participate in a Research Study (IRB #19-553) to determine what types of sensory techniques/aides in the VR Whack-a-mole game will deliver the best performance. Participants will be asked to play whack-a-mole in a Virtual Space while guarding themselves from projectiles coming from behind them. You will be wearing an HTC VIVE VR Headset as well as handle two controllers. The study should take no more than one hour per participant. You will receive a compensation of $10/hr in cash for your contribution, you will need to provide your name and signature in order to receive the payment. Please note that you must be 18+ years old and have 20/20 visual acuity (good vision) or better, you cannot wear glasses during the study. The Fish & Wildlife Graduate Student Association (FIWGSA) is hosting a restaurant fundraiser at the North Main Street Chipotle on March 24th from 5-9 pm. Proceeds will support the Humble Hikes program of Roanoke, VA, in covering transportation costs to and from events. Science on Tap of the NRV presents Bruce Hull speaking on “Leading Where You Are: Sustaining Hope for a Sustainable Future.” “Keeping hope alive, and fanning that flame in others, is an important adaptive leadership activity that anyone can practice from anywhere,” says Dr. Bruce Hull, co-author of the recently published book Leadership for Sustainability: Strategies for Tackling Wicked Problems. Hull is passionate about promoting system change when government, business, and civil society intersect with environmental and economic challenges. He is Senior Fellow at the Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability and president of the board of Climate Solutions University. Hull will share stories that bring him hope–about innovative strategies for tackling today’s most pressing challenges, including climate, food, water, and justice.
