2. GRANT PROPOSAL REVIEWERS NEEDED FOR GPSS GRADUATE RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – 1st posting
Reviewers from all disciplines are encouraged to volunteer. You must be a graduate student engaged in research at Virginia Tech, and not a current applicant for the GRDP. Each proposal consists of an “extended abstract” describing the context, motivation, methods and impacts of an applicants’ research, in addition to a budget and timeline for completion of proposed work. Minimum time commitment is two hours in August – including one hour-long training session (possibly including food) and review of at least two proposals. During Summer 2 (July 6 – August 12), you can complete a 3-credit course on “Ethics in Leader/Follower Relationships.” This is a special study course that could count toward the graduate certificate in collaborative community leadership (https://www.alce.vt.edu/student-info/graduate/commleader.html). Students will explore the relationship between leaders and followers through an ethical lens, with special attention to relational dynamics and moral dilemmas. 6. GRADUATE ASSISTANT POSITION AVAILABLE FOR PEACE CORPS RECRUITER – 1st posting
The Center for International Research, Education, and Development (CIRED) at VT is searching for a graduate student who is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer to serve as a Campus Peace Corps Recruiter (20 hours/week). 7. GRADUATE ASSISTANT POSITION IN SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS – 2nd posting
The scene shop Graduate Assistants make up the core shop crew that physically realize scenic designs for main stage productions, as well as provide support for the School of Performing Arts as needed and assigned. The assistantship in the theatre department’s scene shop is unique compared to other assistantships within the department and the university; work and task expectations oscillates from busy to idle in sequence with the seasonal theatrical production calendars and build schedules. The Scene Shop Assistantship is 9-months, 20 hours per week, with a $19,620 stipend with tuition waiver. The hours are mainly from 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM on Friday. Work over breaks and weekends may occur and is normally planned in advance. Graduate Assistants in the Scene Shop are expected to: assist the Shop Supervisor and Technical Director in the instruction of tool use and technical theatre practices over the course of the semester in conjunction with constructing the seasonal theatrical productions; execute daily tasks that include using hand and power tools in a shop setting, carpentry, metal work, painting, lifting and carrying scenery and materials, cleaning, and other duties as assigned; encourage undergraduate students in the practice of theatre; become acquainted with the processes in the shop and be able to encourage proactive and progressive behavior with other graduate students and undergraduate students; maintain a clean and organized Scene Shop; complete Virginia Tech’s Environmental Health and Safety training courses and work on ladders, in dusty environments, and lift 50 lbs. 8. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR TABLET-BASED MULTIUSER VR GAME – 1st posting
Individuals are needed to participate in a study to experience a tablet-based multiuser VR game (IRB 22-482). Divided into two teams, participants will walk around a room and play an interactive and competitive game. Participants will evaluate the game experience and the tracking ability of devices. The entire study will be video-recorded and may take up to 90 minutes. After successful completion of the study, participants will receive a $15 gift card in compensation. 9. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AN IN-PERSON USER STUDY IN HUMAN-ROBOT INTERACTION – 2nd posting
We are interested in how people respond to robots over long-term interaction. The experiment includes a monitor and a steering wheel. You will use the steering wheel to control your virtual car on the screen. During this experiment you will interact with an autonomous car on various roads. The autonomous car will respond to your driving behavior. We want to see how this interaction affects your responses. Participants will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. 10. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A PERCEPTION STUDY ON THERMAL MAPS – 2nd posting
Participants are needed to take part in a perception study on urban thermal model visualization (IRB 22-299). As part of the study, you will have to take part in 6 map reading tasks on a computer screen. The participants will be shown different urban thermal maps with variations in colormaps, dimensions, and resolutions. The study may take around 1 hour. Any adult (18 years of age or older) can take part in this study. The participants are requested to bring a valid ID with them during their participation in the study to confirm their age. After successful completion of the study, the participants will be compensated with a $15 gift card. 11. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A USER STUDY IN HUMAN-ROBOT INTERACTION – 3rd posting
In this study, participants will be asked to complete a survey that asks questions about their reaction to a simulated driving scenario. It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project.
