The editors of SPECTRA: The ASPECT Journal invite scholarly work in all areas of social, political, ethical, and cultural thought for the Fall 2022 issue. SPECTRA is an online, peer-reviewed scholarly journal established as part of the ASPECT program at VT. SPECTRA welcomes submissions for publication by way of scholarly refereed articles, book reviews, essays, and other works that operate within a problem-centered, theory-driven framework. Submissions may speak to individual social science fields or apply an interdisciplinary lens to contemporary theoretical, critical, and empirical subjects. 11. GPSS DIRECTOR OF EVENTS: CALL FOR APPLICANTS – 3rd posting
The Graduate and Professional Student Senate is seeking a Director of Events.The director of events plans 1-2 high attendance events (500+ attendees) and several smaller events (less than 100 attendees), depending on their capacity and preferences. In addition, the person in this position works with event planning committee members and VT administrators for logistical support of events. The amount of time per week fluctuates depending on the upcoming events. The person in this position also attends all general assembly and e-board meetings and has the option to serve on university committees as well. Time commitment: 2-3 hours average, 10+ hours on event weeks – depending on event. The Virginia Tech Women’s Water Polo Club is looking for a coach for the 2022-2023 school year. We are a competitive club team that travels and competes in the Atlantic Division of the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The College of Architecture is hiring a full-time (20 hours/week) for the 2022-2023 academic year. 19. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS – MOSS ARTS CENTER – 1st posting
For the 2022-23 season, the Moss Arts Center will be participating in the Arts and Economic Prosperity 6, which is a national study conducted by the Americans for the Arts. We are looking for volunteers to assist with survey collection for the following performances: Cimafunk: September 7, Anastasia: November 8, Holiday Pops: December 3, Hairspray: February 14, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: February 28 or March 1, Opera Roanoke and Blacksburg Master Chorale: April 23. Survey collection will typically take place before performances and require an hour to an hour and a half of your time. A brief training will be provided prior to performances. 20. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON PROGRAMMABLE INTERNET-OF-THINGS CONNECTIONS – 1st posting
In this study, we aim to investigate a hybrid programming interface for connecting various services and IoT devices (IRB 22-692). For example, it could be used to express a program that says “If it starts raining, then change the color of a light bulb to blue”. The study is in two parts. The first is a 90-minute user study conducted via Zoom. The second is a self-paced activity to be completed in not more than 120 minutes, followed by one final 30-minute Zoom interview. Participants must be 18 years of age or older and have some experience coding in JavaScript (e.g., are able to write a simple program with an if-else statement. Knowledge of web programming or particular frameworks is not needed.) Participants will be compensated with a $60 Amazon gift card. Participants are needed for a research study to evaluate typing and audio with a new virtual reality keyboard. During the study you will be asked to complete typing tasks and give opinions on the interface and responses about your experience. The study will take approximately 2 hours. Participants must be 18 or older, no glasses (contacts OK), not hard of hearing nor having dyslexia nor having photosensitive epilepsy, fluent in English, and able to type on a QWERTY keyboard. 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A VIDEO GAME STUDY – 1st posting
The Mind-Body Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting Americans of Chinese or European descent age 18 to 28 for a research study on response to a video game (VT IRB #22-283). Participants will visit the lab once for about 75 minutes. The compensation will be $12. The aim of the study is to examine how people respond differently to playing a video game. Participants will also have to complete questionnaires, take a hearing test, and share their lab experiences. Participants’ physiological data will be recorded. Eligible participants will be Americans who were born or raised in the U.S., and in good physical and mental health.
