8. INSIGHTS ON THE FACULTY JOB MARKET – PREPARING FOR THE FALL APPLICATION SEASON AND BEYOND

Virginia Tech Postdoctoral Affairs Program Administrator, Chris Smith, will share data from a set of faculty job market applicant surveys from 2018 to the present as well as an overview of the Academic Career Readiness Assessment developed at UCSF. Attendees will leave with insights on some of the critical factors and metrics associated with landing a faculty position as well as an appreciation of the different qualifications needed to be competitive at different types of institutions. This summer we have reviewed and updated all of our paper-based and pdf forms, introducing a new design, streamlining content, and providing a single form-submission portal http://tiny.cc/VTgradforms  for all forms. All pdf forms are now in fillable format allowing electronic signatures. The redesigned forms website at https://graduateschool.vt.edu/forms.html  provides an easier-to-navigate structure for all of the forms, as well as short descriptions of the function of each form. Please delete all previously used bookmarks to old versions of Graduate School forms and start using the new forms effective immediately. Feedback and recommendations for corrections on any of the forms may be submitted online from the forms website.

The editors of SPECTRA: The ASPECT Journal invite scholarly work in all areas of social, political, ethical, and cultural thought for the Fall 2022 issue. SPECTRA is an online, peer-reviewed scholarly journal established as part of the ASPECT program at VT. SPECTRA welcomes submissions for publication by way of scholarly refereed articles, book reviews, essays, and other works that operate within a problem-centered, theory-driven framework. Submissions may speak to individual social science fields or apply an interdisciplinary lens to contemporary theoretical, critical, and empirical subjects. Recent articles have centered on biopolitics, affect, and interdisciplinary methodologies, among other topics in contemporary social and humanistic thought. Full submissions are due by Oct 28, 2022. The Virginia Tech Women’s Water Polo Club is looking for a coach for the 2022-2023 school year. We are a competitive club team that travels and competes in the Atlantic Division of the Collegiate Water Polo Association. Our primary competitive season is in the spring, and we typically compete in 4 tournaments, as well as in 1-2 invitational tournaments in the fall. The College of Architecture is hiring a full-time (20 hours/week) for the 2022-2023 academic year. 20. VOLUNTEER REVIEWERS NEEDED FOR FALL 2022 TRAVEL FUND PROGRAM APPLICATIONS – 1st posting
Graduate students from all departments are encouraged to volunteer as reviewers for the GPSS Travel Fund Program (TFP). Volunteers must not be current applicants for the TFP. All work is self-paced, and can be completed remotely. The average application review takes 5-7 minutes. Minimum time commitment is 1 hour between now and 9/10/22. Immersive technology is getting more and more mature, which not only give us more affordance in interacting and viewing virtual objects, but also allow us to collaborate with different devices. We want to 1. explore how asymmetric visualization affects collaboration in problem-solving tasks and 2. understand what features needs to be added to support asymmetric collaboration for data visualization. Participants should be experienced in VR and able to read charts (e.g., bar chart, node-link diagram). Participants will be compensated $20.00. 22. ENDURANCE AND ULTRA-ENDURANCE ATHLETES NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY – 1st posting
The Human Integrative Physiology Lab wants to examine the relationship between physical activity level and the total number of calories expended each day. You may be able to participate if you: are age 18-60 years old, are fully vaccinated for Covid-19, have stable body weight the past year (± 5lb), are free of cardio/metabolic, lung or kidney diseases or cancer, have competed in marathons or ultra- marathons the past year, have sustained high level of training, have not had recent injuries affecting your training volume. Study involvement: fasting blood sample, pregnancy test, measurements of body fat, physical activity and fitness level, urine collection during 14 days after drinking a stable isotope water, wear an activity tracker around your waist or on your thigh for 2 weeks (except while showering, swimming, or sleeping),  6 hours commitment approximately with 1 virtual visit and 2 visits to the lab. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON LONG-DISTANCE FEMALE RUNNERS – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effect of jumping exercises on bone health in long-distance female runners (IRB 22-168). As part of this study, you will be asked to consume a reduced-calorie diet that will be provided by the research team, and participate in two phases of supervised treadmill runs and jumping exercises on 5 consecutive days. Total time commitment would be 16 non-consecutive days of lab visits. Study measurements will include body composition, bone density, VO2max, and exercise efficiency. Eligible participants must be a woman in good general health between 18-30 years of age with a BMI between 18.5-25.0 kg/m2, non-smoker, regular menstrual cycle, not on birth control (including oral contraceptives, injections, and IUD), can run at least 5 days/week for 60-90 minutes each day, not taking any medications that could affect study results, and not pregnant or lactating. For the 2022-23 season, the Moss Arts Center will be participating in the Arts and Economic Prosperity 6, which is a national study conducted by the Americans for the Arts. We are looking for volunteers to assist with survey collection for the following performances: Cimafunk: September 7, Anastasia: November 8, Holiday Pops: December 3, Hairspray: February 14, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: February 28 or March 1, Opera Roanoke and Blacksburg Master Chorale: April 23. Survey collection will typically take place before performances and require an hour to an hour and a half of your time. A brief training will be provided prior to performances. 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON PROGRAMMABLE INTERNET-OF-THINGS CONNECTIONS – 2nd posting
In this study, we aim to investigate a hybrid programming interface for connecting various services and IoT devices (IRB 22-692). For example, it could be used to express a program that says “If it starts raining, then change the color of a light bulb to blue”. The study is in two parts. The first is a 90-minute user study conducted via Zoom. The second is a self-paced activity to be completed in not more than 120 minutes, followed by one final 30-minute Zoom interview. Participants must be 18 years of age or older and have some experience coding in JavaScript (e.g., are able to write a simple program with an if-else statement. Knowledge of web programming or particular frameworks is not needed.) Participants will be compensated with a $60 Amazon gift card. Participants are needed for a research study to evaluate typing and audio with a new virtual reality keyboard. During the study you will be asked to complete typing tasks and give opinions on the interface and responses about your experience. The study will take approximately 2 hours. Participants must be 18 or older, no glasses (contacts OK), not hard of hearing nor having dyslexia nor having photosensitive epilepsy, fluent in English, and able to type on a QWERTY keyboard. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A VIDEO GAME STUDY – 2nd posting
The Mind-Body Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting Americans of Chinese or European descent age 18 to 28 for a research study on response to a video game (VT IRB #22-283). Participants will visit the lab once for about 75 minutes. The compensation will be $12. The aim of the study is to examine how people respond differently to playing a video game. Participants will also have to complete questionnaires, take a hearing test, and share their lab experiences. Participants’ physiological data will be recorded. Cimafunk’s name refers to his heritage as a cimarrón — Cubans of African descent who resisted and escaped slavery — as well as to the essence of his music that aims to subvert conventional sounds with rhythmic innovation. The opioid epidemic is a public health crisis and has been in the forefront of the news for a few years now. Any person, no matter their age, income, or any other demographic, can experience an overdose or develop a substance use disorder (SUD). Knowing how to respond and possibly reverse an opioid overdose can save someone’s life and might help them access needed resources for recovery. Join the Public Health Association and Hokie Wellness to learn more about opioids, addiction, and how to respond in an emergency.
