14. COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE (COVES) POLICY FELLOWSHIP – 2nd posting
The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Policy Fellowship is a science policy fellowship for Virginia that is hosted by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (VASEM). COVES fellows are graduate students or postdoctoral researchers in science, technology, engineering, math and health (STEM-H) fields at Virginian Universities who spend 12 weeks over the summer working with Host Offices in the Virginia legislative and executive branches or in the policy offices of NGOs and scientific industries in Virginia. In addition to their work in their Host Offices, fellows are paired with a science policy mentor from VASEM, trained through an orientation at the start of their fellowship, and participate in networking and career development activities throughout the fellowship. The VT Honors College focuses on transdisciplinary, collaborative, and experiential learning. Our new, required course, UH 1404, will introduce students to interdisciplinarity, systems thinking, problem analysis, and undergraduate research. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – ROBOT ESCAPE ROOM – 1st posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals who are at least 18-year-old to participate in a study to investigates the effects of different emotions on human trust in social robots in an escape room situation. During the study, you will be asked to complete an emotion induction writing task and solve puzzles in an escape room with a humanoid robot agent. You will also need to fill out different questionnaires three times (before and after the emotion induction task & after successfully escaping the room.) The study will last approximately 60 minutes. 24. PARTICIPATIONS NEEDED FOR EXOSKELETON REARCH STUDY – 1st posting
You will be asked to complete 2 sessions over 2 days, with each session lasting up to 4 hours. In both sessions, you will wear two exoskeletons and perform several tasks, such as ladder climbing, walking, lifting/lowering, and simulated drilling. During each session, we will monitor your postures/motions and muscle activity from select muscle groups in the back and shoulder regions. You are eligible to participate if you: are 18-30 years old, are not pregnant, have no current or recent (past 12 months) musculoskeletal disorders or injuries that affect your daily activities, have the waist circumference of ≥27 inches (this is due to exoskeleton fits). 26. PANELISTS NEEDED FOR EDAMAME FLAVOR STUDY – 1st posting
The VT Sensory Evaluation Lab (SEL) is researching the sensory attributes of US edamame (IRB #23-064). We are recruiting volunteers who are 18 years or older, have no known soy allergies or sensitivities, and are interested in tasting edamame to participate. Subjects will be required to participate in up to 8, 1-hour “consensus training” sessions over 2-5-weeks that involve smelling, tasting, and describing edamame, followed by 4 to 6, 30-45-minute sessions that involve smelling, tasting, and rating each edamame sample using the vocabulary you helped develop. Snacks will be provided after each session. The training sessions will be audio-recorded, with permission. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: RESEARCH STUDY – EFFECTS OF INTELLIGENT AGENTS IN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES – 2nd posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to determine the effects of in-vehicle agents on driver experiences and performance in an autonomous vehicle. During the study, you will be asked to drive in a driving simulator. Criteria for eligibility are 1) active driver with a valid driver license, 2) above age 18+ with good health, 3) normal vision and hearing, and 4) fluent in English. The study will last approximately 60 minutes. Each participant can choose between monetary compensation for $10 and course credits (0.5 credits/hour) from ISE 3614. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sensory similarity of descriptive terms used to describe hard cider and to ultimately build a flavor wheel for hard cider made in the United States. 29. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AN AUGEMENTED/VIRTUAL REALITY RESEARCH USER STUDY – 2nd posting
The 3D Interaction (3DI) group invites you to participate in a research study with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. Participants in the study will come to Room 160 (Sandbox), Moss Arts Center, to try out several interaction techniques while seated, standing, or moving around in an indoor area, and be asked for their comments about these techniques. The session will take about 60-75 minutes, participation is entirely voluntary. Participants need to be English speakers, at least 18 years old, have normal vision (contact lenses are fine, glasses are not supported). Participants should not have any symptom or known recent exposure to COVID-19. Participation will be on a first come first serve basis. 30. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON PROCESSED FOOD – 2nd posting
The major purpose of this research project is to learn if consuming processed or less processed foods has an impact on how a person’s brain responds to processed foods. Briefly, the full study is 10-12 weeks long with two 14-day periods of controlled feeding where we will provide ALL foods and beverages for you to eat during those times. If you choose to participate, the study will consist of approximately 34 visits and require approximately 33-35 hours of your time. Most of these visits take place in Blacksburg with some taking place on the Roanoke campus. Participants can receive up to $400 and a 3D printed brain for completion of study! The Children’s Emotions Lab in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at VT is looking for parents of two-year-old children in the US who own and regularly use a smartphone to participate in a new research study focusing on parent-child interactions. An online survey is available for parents of 2-year-olds across the US and an in-person laboratory visit is available to parents of 30-36 month-olds in Southwest Virginia. 32. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON EXERCISE BREAKS AND COGNITION – 3rd posting
The Cognitive Aging and Translational Science (CAATS) Lab is seeking participants for a study investigating the effects of activity breaks on cognition. Participants are asked to watch a lecture video and complete tasks while wearing an FNIRS device. Participants will also be asked to complete an activity during a scheduled break. It is estimated to take 90 minutes to complete and participants will receive 1.5 SONA credits for their participation. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 40 and be a Virginia Tech student. Participants must not be majoring in earth sciences or a related field, must be able to complete light physical activities, and must not be diagnosed with cardiovascular or respiratory disorders, or learning disabilities. 35. GRANATA BIOMECHANICS LAB RECRUITING FOR RESEARCH STUDY UNDERSTANDING BIOMECHANICAL PERFORMANCE DURING CHILD-CARE-RELATED ACTIVITIES – 3rd posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting women who have given birth in the last 6 – 12 months (postpartum) and women who have never been pregnant, for a biomechanical performance study (protocol number 22-1085). Study participation will involve a single 2-hour visit. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of lifting and loading a portable car seat in women 6 to 12 months after childbirth, compared to women having never been pregnant. This study will include questionnaires, six clinical assessments, and a series of three different lifting and loading conditions, of a 33 lbs. portable car seat, as your movements are tracked with an eight camera video recording system and four in-ground force plates. Participants will have their choice of a Fire Tv Stick or Echo Dot 3rd Gen for their time and effort upon completing the study. 36. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BIOMETRIC RESEARCH USING VIDEOS – 3rd posting
We are recruiting participants for a research study that aims to understand how well we can determine heart rate and other information about the cardiovascular system by using video cameras. We are seeking individuals (US Citizens or Green Card) of various skin tones to sit for 2 sessions while wearing a heart monitor (on the wrist or fingertip) and being video recorded by a normal camera and 1 or 2 infrared cameras. The first session is intended to last approximately 90 minutes, and the second session should last 60 minutes. Participants will be compensated $50 for full participation, or $20 per hour for partial participation, to thank them for their time. Attendees will be introduced to the concepts of Whiteness and White Supremacy Culture before participating in individual reflective practice based in a Critical Narrative Analysis (Langdridge, 2007) framework. This reflection time will assist them in deconstructing their own experiences with these concepts. Engaging with these topics is imperative for advancing antiracism and decolonization in academia.
