  • GRADUATE SCHOOL: In-person advising, drop-off or pick-up of documents and materials, and a space to study and take a break! Visit SHIP (120 GLC),summer walk-in hours starting June 1st will be held on Monday and Thursday 9:00-4:00pm. The Graduate School offices will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the summer. Join us for the Second Annual Biomedical Professional Development Symposium to gain knowledge and ask questions about career paths outside of academia for those with biomedical degrees, including careers in nonprofit, biotech, government, and science policy! The symposium will be held on June 1st from 9am-4pm at Riverside Circle in Roanoke, VA on the Health Sciences & Technology campus, with breakfast for all and lunch provided for the first 50 registrants. Seeking nutrition guidance? Do you need help in developing a sustainable, healthy lifestyle? Graduate-level nutrition and dietetics students are here to help. The Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise Department at Virginia Tech provides FREE one-on-one nutrition counseling support services to any interested students, faculty, or staff. Join us for The Connection Project, an opportunity to meet with a small group of peers and engage with a variety of topics like conflict, trust, and supporting others with a diverse group of your peers. Discussions and activities change every week as your relationships with your fellow group members grow. There are no tests, projects, or assignments, just setting aside about an hour a week to continue personal growth intentionally and alongside some friendly new faces. 10. VP FOR FINANCE SENIOR MANAGEMENT AREA SEEKS GRADUATE ASSISTANT – 1st posting
The VP for Finance Senior Management Area seeks a full-time (20 hr./week) Graduate Assistant to support initiatives furthering the automation of administrative tasks using various technologies such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA). This is an appointment available for Fall 2023. The GA will work closely with the finance solutions team to compile business requirements, coordinate with business process owners to document changes to current business practices, assist in process re-engineering and change management planning efforts, and independently analyze business case scenarios. The successful candidate should demonstrate familiarity with basic programming constructs, knowledge of process mapping and design, experience with relational databases and query tools, and an ability to manipulate large sets of data. 11. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A VIRTUAL REALITY GAMING STUDY – 1st posting
Virginia Tech researchers in the Cognitive Engineering for Novel Technologies (COGENT) Lab are recruiting participants for a virtual reality research study (IRB# 22-144). The purpose of this research study is to determine how the use of virtual reality impacts our ability to detect objects. During the experiment, you will be asked to use virtual reality (VR) glasses to scan an environment for enemy tanks while flying in an autonomous drone. To enroll in this experiment, you do not need to have any experience with VR. You do, however, need to be 18 years of age or older and have normal, or corrected to normal vision. You will be compensated $10 and the study should last no more than 1 hour. The results of this study may be published and your participation is voluntary and confidential. 12. ENDURANCE AND ULTRA-ENDURANCE ATHLETES NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
We need highly active athletes (18-60 years of age) for a study examining the relationship between physical activity and total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567). Participants must be non-pregnant, with a stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb.), and free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer. We look for endurance athletes who have completed in marathons, ultra-marathons or Ironman triathlons in the past year, with sustained high level of training for the past 6 months and with no recent injuries or other reasons that have changed the training volume. This study will require 1 virtual meeting and 2 visits to the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at Virginia Tech, which will take approximately 6 hours. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED INTERVIEW STUDY: TECHNOLOGY-MEDIATED RECREATION – HABITS AND PERSPECTIVES BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER COVID-19 – 3rd posting
You are invited to participate in an interview study which aims to learn about individual strategies, habits, and perspectives, with respect to using technology to maintain connections with remote (geographically distant) family and friends. Interested individuals will be asked to complete a screener to determine their eligibility. If eligible, you will be asked to provide consent and indicate your preferred day(s) and time(s) for participating in the interview. The interview study will take 45 to 60 minutes to complete, conducted via Zoom. Eligibility: 18-years and older and capable of providing consent are . No risks are associated with participating in this study. Compensation: $10 in total (in the form of an Amazon gift card) for your time and effort. 20. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS DEEP DIVE
Monday, June 26-Thursday, June 29, 10am-3pm, Zoom
Join us virtually on June 26 – 29, 10am – 3pm EST for the activity-based Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Deep Dive! During this 4-day workshop participants will become familiar with the major required steps of this methodology, practice relevant skills, and consider the many decisions necessary for a successful comprehensive review and synthesis. Instructors for this course include method and search experts at the Virginia Tech (VT) Libraries, a researcher who conducts qualitative systematic reviews with the Social Ecology Lab at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, and a VT statistician with experience helping researchers conduct meta-analyses in the context of educational and health-related research.
