East Los Angeles Chicano indie-folk band Las Cafeteras has taken the music scene by storm with its infectious live performances, crossing many genres and borders along the way. With jaranas and requintos (Mexican ukulele-sized guitars) and the rhythmic percussion created by dancing on a wood floor, Las Cafeteras remixes roots music as modern day troubadours, combining Son Jarocho (Veracruz music style) with rock and a heaping spoonful of impassioned social justice. The 2024 SGSO Research Symposium gathers graduate and undergraduate students along with faculty to discuss their research interests, goals, and pursuits while enjoying free food! About 140 million babies are born each year, and most of them begin life nourished by human milk. Join us to learn about this essential resource from a panel of breastfeeding experts, including a researcher studying the impact of milk on brain development, a pediatric nurse practitioner, a lactation consultant, and a researcher who studies the social and political forces at play in the world of infant feeding.

VT Engage is taking applications for two summer global service immersion trips to Poland and the Dominican Republic this summer. Why serve globally? The combination of service, learning, and culture immersion can be a powerful experience for students. VT Engage: The Center for Leadership & Service Learning carefully selects the community partners we serve with, choosing ones we hope to develop a long-term partnership with. While these are service trips, we consider learning outcomes for student to be just as valuable as the service focus. Students of any year or major (undergraduate or graduate) are invited to apply for these trips. There is a limited number of need based financial assistance available for both trips. The National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program supports doctoral research with relevance to criminal or juvenile justice in the United States. 42. SUMMER CUNNINGHAM FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE – DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2024
In combination with the Cunningham Doctoral Scholarship and the Graduate School Annual Fund, we are delighted to announce the availability of summer fellowships in the amount of $7,500 each. This supplement will be awarded as a lump sum fellowship (see note below) at the beginning of the summer. This is a one-time award, cannot be renewed, and is awarded without the expectation of any additional work on your part. Awardees must be current Ph.D. students who are working on their dissertations during the summer months. This award cannot be combined with other Virginia Tech funding sources. Priority will be given to those toward the end of their program. Financial need will be considered as a secondary factor. Applications will be accepted until May 1. NOTE: Fellowships are not considered employment. No taxes are withheld and you will not receive a W2 form at the end of the year. The 3D Interaction (3DI) and InfoVis group at Virginia Tech invite you to participate in a research study using augmented reality (AR) technologies. Our team is investigating the best ways to interact with AR and VR, and this study compares various interaction methods with virtual data and information. Connie Chang (they/he/she) is a queer and trans Chinese-American actual play Game Master who blends black-hearted apocalyptica with queer drama. They are the GM and Creative Director for Transplanar RPG, an all-transgender, people of color-led dark fantasy TTRPG show set in an original noncolonial, anti-orientalist multiverse. She is the designer behind GODKILLER, a holypunk duet game for one player, the Godkiller, and one GM, god. The Big Event is one day of service where thousands of Hokies go out and serve the Blacksburg and New River Valley community. Service projects include raking, mulching, painting, and more, and is a huge help to the community. Students can sign up with their Virginia Tech organizations, with friends, or individually and have the opportunity to meet new people! Through this experience, students will be able to bond with their teams, enjoy the kickoff celebration on the Drillfield, and be able to hear the stories of residents of the New River Valley, many of which are Hokie alumni. Climate Change is a global issue that requires immediate action. At VT, we have developed a Climate Action Commitment. Goals include carbon neutrality, waste management, sustainability policy, single-occupancy vehicles, and institutional changes. To celebrate this year’s Earth Day we will organize a discussion forum titled “Pathways on Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to Climate Action Commitments at VT.” This discussion explores leveraging diversity within the school community to fulfil our commitments to climate action.
