In collaboration with Moss Arts Center, APIDA + Center will host the amazing Pacific Islander artists behind Small Island Big Song for lunch prior to their evening performance on April 17th, 2024. This coalition of artists from all over the Pacific and Indian Oceans confront effects of climate change and other environmental and political issues through song, dance, and film that highlight native instruments, language, and culture. 6. APIDA HERITAGE MONTH PRESENTS: A CASUAL DISCUSSION ABOUT CASTE

Last year California nearly passed a bill (HB 403) banning caste discrimination in the state. In Maryland, the tallest statue of B. R. Ambedkar, the champion of anti-casteism, was unveiled. Yet still stories persist that caste does not travel beyond the borders of India. How might caste power dynamics operate on a university campus in the U.S.? As part of APIDA Heritage Month and in continuing the conversation started in February around the subject of caste, this event will highlight student voices. 7. PANEL DISCUSSION: CLIMATE CHANGE, OUR RESPONSE AS ARTISTS AND SCIENTISTS

The musicians in Small Island, Big Song would tell you that the ocean does not divide their island homes. It connects them. In this inspiring multimedia concert confronting climate change, artists from Pacific and Indian Ocean nations unite to blend traditions and create music celebrating the ways we are all connected. Free childcare for graduate student families at the VT Women’s Center, 6:30-8:00 on Thursday evenings when classes are in session. Advance sign-up is required, and there are limited spaces. Learn how to use some of the principles of Crucial Conversations’ Model for Mastering Dialogue to embrace difficult situations in ways that strengthen relationships and improve results. In addition, we will begin to explore how an understanding of our Clifton Strengths can help us gain a common language that allows us to express how we work, what we value, and where we excel. Using this common language, we can also begin to appreciate our and our team members’ unique contributions to the team. The Student Ambassador Program through Cranwell International Center, partnered with The Graduate School, is starting “Friendly Talking,” a student led group that allows international students to practice their English with students who speak English as their first language. ALS 5334 Professional Communication Agriculture and Life Sciences is being offered this summer 5/20 to 6/28. The CRN number is 64577. ALS 5334 is a one credit hour online class that focuses on principles of, and skill development in, academic communication to enhance professional preparation in agriculture and the life sciences. 27. NIJ GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: APRIL 10, 2024 (grants.gov) and APRIL 17, 2024 (Just Grants)
The National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program supports doctoral research with relevance to criminal or juvenile justice in the United States. This includes criminology, forensic science, technology for law enforcement, and more. Applications from all science and engineering fields are welcome. 28. SUMMER MICROGRANT PROGRAM – DEADLINE: APRIL 30, 2024
The new 2024 summer cycle of Research!America’s Civic Engagement Microgrant Program, generously supported by the Sloan Foundation, will provide support for groups led by STEM graduate students, professional students (medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, etc.), and postdocs to create projects aimed at building dialogue with public officials, community leaders, and local community members around issues of common interest.   We are seeking applications from groups of graduate students and post-docs for grants up to $3,000 to support a wide range of civic engagement activities. 29. SUMMER CUNNINGHAM FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE – DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2024
In combination with the Cunningham Doctoral Scholarship and the Graduate School Annual Fund, we are delighted to announce the availability of summer fellowships in the amount of $7,500 each. This supplement will be awarded as a lump sum fellowship (see note below) at the beginning of the summer. This is a one-time award, cannot be renewed, and is awarded without the expectation of any additional work on your part. Awardees must be current Ph.D. students who are working on their dissertations during the summer months. This award cannot be combined with other Virginia Tech funding sources. Priority will be given to those toward the end of their program. Financial need will be considered as a secondary factor. Applications will be accepted until May 1. The 2024 Google PhD Fellowship Program, which directly financially supports doctoral students doing exceptional research in computer science and related fields, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor, is opening for nominations. Are you interested in learning more about your energy needs and helping researchers better measure food intake in participants of varying body sizes? Participants are needed for the MEASURE study (IRB #22-654) seeking to understand how a participant’s weight class can affect measurements of dietary intake. Participants will complete measurements of height, weight, body composition, energy expenditure, and food intake over a period of 5-7 weeks with a total of 5 visits to campus. To be eligible, you must be over 18, have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2, weigh under 600 lbs., and not be following a weight control diet. Our experiment aims to explore the potential of AI-powered conversational agents to revolutionize the way we interact with vehicles. 40. ADULTS WITH ADHD NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF DANCE AND EXERCISE ON BRAIN AND BEHAVIOR –1st posting
The study (VT IRB 23-811) aims to examine the acute impact dance has on young adults with ADHD assessed through brain activity, psychological tests, heart rate, and motor tasks. Study participation will involve two visits lasting 4 to 4.5 hours total. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three 30-minute interventions: dance exergaming (e.g. Just Dance on the Nintendo Switch), stationary biking while listening to music, or sedentary music listening. They will be asked to answer a series of questions, complete psychological tests on a computer, complete a series of balance tests while standing, and have their brain activity and heart rate measured. Participant qualifications: Adults ages 18-24 with a formal diagnosis of any presentation of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Hyperactive-Impulsive, Inattentive, or Combined) and physical activity readiness are eligible. Do you help care for an older adult in your life? If so, you may qualify for the CAATS Lab’s study on caregiver stress and cognition! The CAATS Lab at Virginia Tech is look to recruit adults over the age of 18 who care for an older adult. Care activities can range from helping with everyday needs (i.e., paying bills, grocery shopping, etc.) to intensive physical, mental, or emotional care. Direct care workers are also encouraged to participate! Participants can expect to undergo a short, 15-20 minute screening call as well as a single, 60-90 minute in-person session. 42. RECRUITING FOR RESEARCH STUDY UNDERSTANDING BIOMECHANICAL PERFORMANCE DURING CHILD CARE RELATED ACTIVITIES – 2nd posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting women who have given birth in the last 6 – 12 months (postpartum) and women who have never been pregnant, for a biomechanical performance study (protocol number 22-1085) to explore the effects of lifting and loading a portable car seat in women 6 to 12 months after childbirth, compared to women having never been pregnant. Study participation will involve a single 2-hour visit. This study will include questionnaires, six clinical assessments, and a series of three different lifting and loading conditions, of a 33 lbs. portable car seat, as your movements are tracked. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, to not currently pregnant, not diagnosed with a postural stability condition affecting balance, a neurologic disorder, not sustained an injury in the last two months that limited physical activity for more than two days, have not had a prior serious leg injury or surgery, and can perform daily tasks of loading and lifting. Eligible postpartum participants need to have given birth in the last 6 months to 1 year, had a vaginal delivery, and have not experienced a grade 4 perineal tear. 43. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH STUDY ON SLEEP AND BRAIN-MACHINE INTERFACE LEARNING – 2nd posting
This Virginia Tech study (VT IRB # 17-860) aims to uncover what events occur in the brain during sleep that help facilitate the learning of a new task. To meet this goal, we utilize a number of physiological recordings in the lab, such as EEG, EMG, and EOG recordings. The Brain-machine interface learning translates neural data into commands to control external software or hardwire, like controlling a moving ball on a computer screen with your thoughts. Participants that are assigned to the experimental group must sleep in the lab, either by taking a nap or by sleeping overnight. If you are assigned to the control group, you will watch a documentary during nap. Total study time is approximately 11 hours for overnights or 5 hours for naps. People between 18 and 26 years with no history of significant chronic neurological disease, severe mental illness, or any DSM-IV axis I disorders, and no hearing or sleep disorders. GTAs and Teaching Faculty in STEM topics are invited to attend a one-day introductory workshop on WeBWorK on Monday, May 13th 845am-4:30pm at Newman Library 1st floor Goodall Room (MPR). WeBWorK is an open-source, Canvas-integrated, hosted, online system for delivering and grading custom homework in STEM disciplines. It has similar features to commercial products like WebAssign, MyLab and Mastering Physics, but without a subscription cost for VT students.  This one-day, faculty led workshop is for VT faculty and GTAs who want to learn more about how to g get started using WeBWorK in their classes.  Registration is required.
