To celebrate APIDA Heritage Month, the APIDA + Center in collaboration with University Libraries will host a book fair highlighting voices of APIDA creators. Harkening back to the times of elementary school book fairs, attendees are welcome to discover new rich stories from APIDA authors and filmmakers. University Libraries will present a curated collection of written poetry and prose centering on APIDA experiences and characters. Additionally, participants will find manga, anime, and movies from APIDA artists. All media and materials are available for check out to campus community members. In 2013, astrophysicist (and atheist) Nahum Arav and chemist (and Christian) Paul Carlier met as participants on a forum on science and religion. Thanks to gift cards from the forum organizers, Nahum and Paul began meeting for lunch at the Cellar to better understand their different perspectives on religion, the meaning and purpose of life, and the limits of science. Eleven years and many lunches later, they count each other as close friends. What did they learn about each other, where did they find unexpected consensus, and where do they still disagree (and how do they handle those disagreements as friends)? Free childcare for graduate student families at the VT Women’s Center, 6:30-8:00 on Thursday evenings when classes are in session. Advance sign-up is required, and there are limited spaces. 15. ROADTRIP TO THE VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN ROANOKE
Sunday, April 14, 7:15am, meet in Squires Parking Lot
The APIDA + Center and AASU, through the support of the Dean of Students Interfaith Office, would like to offer 10 students a chance to visit the Vietnamese Buddhist Temple in Roanoke on Sunday, April 14th, 2024. There is an English language service offered that day starting at 8:30 AM EST. Thus, you would need to arrive at the Squires Parking lot by 7:15 AM EST in order to leave VT at 7:30 AM EST. ALS 5334 Professional Communication Agriculture and Life Sciences is being offered this summer 5/20 to 6/28. The CRN number is 64577. ALS 5334 is a one credit hour online class that focuses on principles of, and skill development in, academic communication to enhance professional preparation in agriculture and the life sciences. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

VT Engage is taking applications for two summer global service immersion trips to Poland and the Dominican Republic this summer. Why serve globally? The combination of service, learning, and culture immersion can be a powerful experience for students. VT Engage: The Center for Leadership & Service Learning carefully selects the community partners we serve with, choosing ones we hope to develop a long-term partnership with. While these are service trips, we consider learning outcomes for student to be just as valuable as the service focus. The Graduate School is seeking 1-2 graduate student speakers for the Spring 2024 Graduate Commencement Ceremony on Wednesday, May 8, 10:00am, at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia. The speeches are modeled after the talks at the Center for Communicating Science’s Nutshell Games, with individual speeches lasting about 90 seconds. 26. NIJ GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: APRIL 10, 2024 (grants.gov) and APRIL 17, 2024 (Just Grants)
The National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program supports doctoral research with relevance to criminal or juvenile justice in the United States. 28. SUMMER CUNNINGHAM FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE – DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2024
In combination with the Cunningham Doctoral Scholarship and the Graduate School Annual Fund, we are delighted to announce the availability of summer fellowships in the amount of $7,500 each. This supplement will be awarded as a lump sum fellowship (see note below) at the beginning of the summer. This is a one-time award, cannot be renewed, and is awarded without the expectation of any additional work on your part. Awardees must be current Ph.D. students who are working on their dissertations during the summer months. This award cannot be combined with other Virginia Tech funding sources. Do you help care for an older adult in your life? If so, you may qualify for the CAATS Lab’s study on caregiver stress and cognition! The CAATS Lab at Virginia Tech is look to recruit adults over the age of 18 who care for an older adult. Care activities can range from helping with everyday needs (i.e., paying bills, grocery shopping, etc.) to intensive physical, mental, or emotional care. Direct care workers are also encouraged to participate! Participants can expect to undergo a short, 15-20 minute screening call as well as a single, 60-90 minute in-person session. This session includes participation in surveys, a short interview going over your responses, participation in a brief computerized cognitive task, and non-invasive physiological measurements (i.e., blood pressure, pulse, and brain oxygenation via fNIRS). 34. RECRUITING FOR RESEARCH STUDY UNDERSTANDING BIOMECHANICAL PERFORMANCE DURING CHILD CARE RELATED ACTIVITIES – 1st posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting women who have given birth in the last 6 – 12 months (postpartum) and women who have never been pregnant, for a biomechanical performance study (protocol number 22-1085) to explore the effects of lifting and loading a portable car seat in women 6 to 12 months after childbirth, compared to women having never been pregnant.                  Study participation will involve a single 2-hour visit. This study will include questionnaires, six clinical assessments, and a series of three different lifting and loading conditions, of a 33 lbs. portable car seat, as your movements are tracked. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, to not currently pregnant, not diagnosed with a postural stability condition affecting balance, a neurologic disorder, not sustained an injury in the last two months that limited physical activity for more than two days, have not had a prior serious leg injury or surgery, and can perform daily tasks of loading and lifting. Eligible postpartum participants need to have given birth in the last 6 months to 1 year, had a vaginal delivery, and have not experienced a grade 4 perineal tear. 35. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH STUDY ON SLEEP AND BRAIN-MACHINE INTERFACE LEARNING – 1st posting
This Virginia Tech study (VT IRB # 17-860) aims to uncover what events occur in the brain during sleep that help facilitate the learning of a new task. To meet this goal, we utilize a number of physiological recordings in the lab, such as EEG, EMG, and EOG recordings. The Brain-machine interface learning translates neural data into commands to control external software or hardwire, like controlling a moving ball on a computer screen with your thoughts. Participants that are assigned to the experimental group must sleep in the lab, either by taking a nap or by sleeping overnight. If you are assigned to the control group, you will watch a documentary during nap. Total study time is approximately 11 hours for overnights or 5 hours for naps. People between 18 and 26 years with no history of significant chronic neurological disease, severe mental illness, or any DSM-IV axis I disorders, and no hearing or sleep disorders. Last year California nearly passed a bill (HB 403) banning caste discrimination in the state. In Maryland, the tallest statue of B. R. Ambedkar, the champion of anti-casteism, was unveiled. Yet still stories persist that caste does not travel beyond the borders of India. How might caste power dynamics operate on a university campus in the U.S.? As part of APIDA Heritage Month and in continuing the conversation started in February around the subject of caste, this event will highlight student voices. The Student Ambassador Program through Cranwell International Center, partnered with The Graduate School, is starting “Friendly Talking,” a student led group that allows international students to practice their English with students who speak English as their first language. Climate Change is a global issue that requires immediate action. At VT, we have developed a Climate Action Commitment. Goals include carbon neutrality, waste management, sustainability policy, single-occupancy vehicles, and institutional changes. To celebrate this year’s Earth Day, we will organize a discussion forum titled “Pathways on Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to Climate Action Commitments at VT.” This discussion explores leveraging diversity within the school community to fulfil our commitments to climate action.
