- GRADUATE SCHOOL: Graduate School summer hours: In-person advising, drop-off or pick-up of documents and materials, and a space to study and take a break! Visit 120 GLC, summer walk-in hours will be held on Monday and Thursday 9:00-4:00pm. The Graduate School offices will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the summer. Staff will be available by phone 540 231-8636 or email grads@vt.edu. If you prefer Zoom advising: request one-on-one assistantship or academic advising by using our online request form to set-up a Zoom session.

1. LEARN HOW TO WRITE EFFECTIVE GRANT PROPOSALS!
Wednesday, July 10, 2-3:15 pm, GLC Room C
There are many opportunities for graduate students to write proposals in order to obtain their own funding (the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships Program (GRFP) being a great example). Every VT grad student should strongly consider writing such a proposal. Benefits to you include RA funding, a great line on your CV, increasing your appeal to potential advisors and collaborators, and gaining valuable experience in selling your ideas, writing grant proposals, and in persuasive writing in general. Now you have a great opportunity to learn how to write effective proposals. The Graduate School will share an American Chemical Society webinar from expert grant writers on the topic “Crafting a Standout Grant Proposal: Tips and Success Stories”. Come and join us in Conference Room C of the Graduate Life Center (GLC) on July 10, from 2:00-3:15 pm, to view the webinar together. Associate Dean Kevin Edgar will also be there in person to answer any specific questions you might have afterwards.

2. 2024 FUTURE FACULTY DIVERSITY PROGRAM – 2nd posting
Applications are now open for the 2024 Future Faculty Diversity Program (FFDP) at Virginia Tech. Applications are open through August 16, and the program will take place October 6 to 9, 2024. FFDP aims to identify graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who, through their backgrounds, experiences, and achievements, can demonstrate their ability to: work with diverse communities of faculty, staff, and students; contribute to InclusiveVT, the institutional and individual commitment to Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence; support Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community; exhibit their potential to succeed as a faculty member at Virginia Tech based on their research and teaching experience. Duties include: Analyze bibliometric and publication data for collaborative projects between the Office of Research and Innovation and the University Libraries; Analyze bibliometric, publication, grant and patent data from a variety of sources including: Scopus, SciVal, Web of Science, Dimensions; Develop scientific network visualization maps using tools such as VOSviewer, Bibliometrix, and/or Gephi; Support workshops given by the Research Impact and Intelligence Department and the Patent & Trademark Resource Center; Author conference and/or journal articles related to the above work (expected one publication per academic year). Qualifications:
– Advanced coding capability in modern language(s) such as Python and/or R

5. FULBRIGHT POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS FOR U.S. CITIZENS – DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 16, 2024
Fellowships are open to researchers in all academic disciplines and support research programs in Israel for up to 20 months (two academic years). These are the primary benefits of the fellowship: $95,000 scholarship ($47,500 per academic year). 6. EXPLORING STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF THE COMMUNITY OF INQUIRY IN ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMETS WITH GENERATIVE AI – 1st posting
The purpose of this survey is to explore students’ experiences and perceptions of the Community of Inquiry framework in online computer science courses, as well as their views on using generative AI in these courses. We are seeking participants who have previously taken online computer science courses. The survey includes multiple-choice and Likert scale questions, along with optional open-ended questions for additional feedback. Completing this survey will take approximately 7 – 15 minutes. By completing this survey, you will have a chance to win one $10 Amazon gift cards, with the odds of winning being about at least 10% (1 in 10 participants will be selected). 7. OLDER ADULT PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY ABOUT COGNITION – 2nd posting
The MEM lab (Williams Hall) is recruiting participants for a 2-session study of older adult cognition. Eligible participants should be able to quickly read visually-presented English words and are between the ages of 60 to 80. Participants will be compensated $10 for the first session (30-45 min) and $25 for the second session (1 hour). 8. WILDLIFE VIEWER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY – 3rd posting
Do you observe, feed, or photograph wildlife? Do you identify as disabled and/or neurodivergent? If so, researchers at Virginia Tech invite you to be part of a 90-minute online group discussion to share your experiences with wildlife viewing, and your thoughts on increasing inclusion. 9. RESEARCH STUDY ON SUSTAINABLE DIETS – 3rd posting
Two-part, audio recorded focus group interviews at Virginia Tech during Summer 2024. 2 hours maximum for each focus group. Share your views about what motivates your dietary choices, graphic food-based dietary guidelines and sustainable diets. Lunch or dinner will be provided. This study (IRB 23-147) was determined to be exempt from VT’s IRB in March 2023.
