3. IGNORANCE, HUMILITY, AND POLITICS: A CONVERSATION WITH PHILIP YAURE

Please join Minorities and Philosophy for a discussion with Dr. Philip Yaure, an assistant professor of philosophy at Virginia Tech. Dr. Yaure will share insights from his research on the history of African American political thought, the connection between racism and ignorance, and the potentials and pitfalls of combating ignorance through humility. Join the Center for Rural Education (CRE) for a FREE workshop and draft your proposal for the National Forum to Advance Rural Education (NFARE) with support from CRE faculty and scholars. Interested in improving your computing skills for conducting reproducible research? The Library is hosting hands-on workshops for getting started with data analysis in both R and Python beginning the week 24 March. The workshops include Intro to R and RStudio (Wednesday, 9–12pm) and Intro to Python and JupyterLab (Thursday, 5–8pm) with workshops the following week on Data wrangling and visualization with R (Wednesday, 9–12pm) and Programming with Python (Thursday, 5–8pm). You can take the workshops as a series or choose one that best fits your experience and needs. Workshops are open to all VT community members. The Virginia Tech Office of Energy Management is hosting “Careers in Energy: Environmental Stewardship” for students and professionals interested in energy and engineering careers. Join us for a panel of three Community Scholars who will share their semester-long projects. Their initiatives include honoring names and their cultural importance, encouraging more inclusion in research scholarship, and engineering education amongst marginalized elementary school students. 20. LUNCH & LEARN FOR WORKING PARENTS: STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT CHILDREN’S WELL-BEING

The Early Childhood Education Initiatives at Virginia Tech partnered with the Child Study Center at Virginia Tech to offer a Lunch & Learn series of workshops on parenting strategies to support children’s social-emotional and academic well-being. These external factors can amplify a sense of vulnerability and make it challenging to stay focused on your goals. This interactive session will equip you with strategies to manage stress, strengthen your resilience and foster a supportive community as you navigate change together. Join the Virginia Tech Ombuds Offices and Postdoctoral Affairs Program to explore strategies for staying grounded and practicing compassionate listening in the face of uncertainty. 23. SCIENCE ON TAP NRV: FITBITS FOR BLACK BEARS IN VIRGINIA?

Join Ph.D. student Brogan Holcomb to learn more about black bears in Virginia and how her research has provided insight into their behaviors and diet. Using camera collars on black bears allows her to see them move about the landscape and consume a variety of food; her current research is focused on creating a “Fitbit” for black bears. 37. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY – OFFICE OF SCIENCE GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAM –DEADLINE: May 7, 2025
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program provides funding for Ph.D. candidates in the physical sciences to conduct part of their thesis research at a U.S. DOE National Laboratory. 38. SUMMER CUNNINGHAM FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: April 1, 2025 
In combination with the Cunningham Doctoral Scholarship and the Graduate School Annual Fund, we are delighted to announce the availability of summer fellowships in the amount of $7,500 each. This supplement will be awarded as a lump sum fellowship payment through payroll at the beginning of the summer. This is a one-time award, cannot be renewed, and is awarded without the expectation of any additional work on your part. Awardees must be current PhD students who are working on their dissertations during the summer months. This award cannot be combined with other Virginia Tech funding sources. Priority will be given to those: toward the end of their program, with personal financial need, and with a strong record of accomplishment from previous funding. 39. PEACOCK-HARPER FOOD HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE: April 1, 2025 
This year, we plan to award 3 scholarships of $2500 each, subject to funds available and final application pool. These scholarships, awarded by the Virginia Tech Food Studies program, promote the use of the History of Food & Drink collecting area, including the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Collection and  preference is given to applicants whose scholarly pursuits encompass topics related to these. These scholarships honor Janet Cameron and Jean Allen Phillips, both visionaries and exemplary teachers who were passionate about health, nutrition, and student success. Before applying, applicants must schedule a visit with Kira Dietz, Assistant Director, Special Collections and University Archives to learn more about the materials available and to ask questions about how the collection and their research might align. 40. PARTICIPANTS ARE NEEDED FOR A VIRGINIA TECH HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY SCIENCE RESEARCH STUDY (IRB # 24-1349) (1/1)
The purpose of this research is to learn more about first and fourth graders’ literacy, math, self-regulation, and executive function skills, and how those skills are related to each other. We are also interested in the role stress plays in the development of those skills so that educators and/or parents can better support children’s development and literacy and math learning. If your child is eligible, they will participate in one 60-minute in-person session in one of the following locations: the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus, your home, your child’s school, after school, or summer program. You may qualify for this research if you are the parent/guardian of a child in first grade (or a rising second grader during the 2025 summer) or fourth grade (or a rising fifth grader during the 2025 summer), and both you and your child are able to speak and read English. Participants will be compensated with $20 for their time and effort upon completion of the session and survey if it takes place in the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus or your home, or $5 if the session takes place in your child’s school, after school, or summer program. 42. DETECTIVE FOR AN HOUR: A MIXED REALITY USER STUDY – 3rd posting 
Our team is investigating ways to enhance sensemaking activities such as intelligence analysis with immersive technologies. Participants in the study will come to Room 3215, Gilbert Place, 220 Gilbert St, Blacksburg. Participants will be given a case file involving a hypothetical nationwide terrorist attack. The participants will try to solve the case with 3D interaction techniques while seated, standing, or moving around in an indoor area. The entire experimental session will take about 75-90 minutes. Participants will be compensated with a $15 Amazon Gift Card upon completion of the study. Participant qualifications: proficient in English, at least 18 years old, and have normal vision with contact lenses (glasses not supported).
