6. SCIENCE ON TAP: DEFENDING AGAINST HACKERS OF THE QUANTUM FUTURE

Join us to learn about cybersecurity in a future with quantum computers, with guest expert Gretchen Matthews, professor of mathematics at Virginia Tech and director of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, Southwest Virginia. 7. GRADUATE STUDENT LEARNING CIRCLES – January 26

The Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation will host monthly learning circles as a space to build community and enhance interdisciplinary professional development skills centered around food systems work. As a collaborative affinity space for graduate students, learning circles are designed to foster interdisciplinary and meaningful dialogue. Each learning circle installment will focus discussions on graduate student research presentations and topics relevant to personal and professional development skills. The structure of these learning circles is tailored to build on the knowledge and experience of graduate students in various phases of their academic journey to support collective inquiry and meaningful learning exchange. As it looks to publish its fourth issue, Community Change, an open-access, peer-reviewed graduate student journal, seeks submissions that speak to the what, why, and how of transmission and transition in community change. Submissions may take the form of scholarly articles, book reviews, and multimedia from a variety of disciplines. 14. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 2023 NANOTECHNOLOGY ENTREPRENEURSHIP CHALLENGE (NTEC) – 1st posting
Applications are now open for the 2023 Nanotechnology Entrepreneurship Challenge (NTEC)! Students must apply by Noon on National Inventors’ Day, February 11th. Projects that address global climate change are highly encouraged! Multiple cash and in-kind awards are available and all winning teams are encouraged to participate in the Virtual NNCI NTEC Accelerator Program. Regular NTEC teams receive up to $500 and NTEC teams affiliated with minority serving institutions can apply for an NTEC Diversity Award of up to $1,000 per team. Awards are used for qualifying materials purchases and instrument time at participating NNCI sites. 15. COVES FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN- 1st posting
Application deadline is March 1. The COVES (Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science  Fellowship is a full-time summer fellowship program (May 22-August 11) operated by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (the Academy) and open to STEM graduate students. Fellows will receive training in science policy and science communication, spend time in legislative offices, executive agencies, companies or nonprofits in the state, and will be paired with an Academy mentor and involved in briefings, meetings and the Academy’s annual summit in August. The program includes a stipend. The Graduate School will submit five finalists for the fellowship program to the Academy, which will then choose one to represent the university in the program. The Academy will hold two virtual information sessions about the fellowship program.

19. GRADUATE HONOR SYSTEM SEEKING NEW ASSOCIATE CHAIR – 2nd posting
The Graduate Honor System invites applications for an associate chair. Associate chair(s) conduct interviews for GHS cases; examine documents and records to determine relevance to the case; assemble case packets; preside over preliminary review hearings; and prepare a report of hearing outcome and rationale. The associate chair may also assist with conducting ethics trainings and GHS orientations for departments. Applicants must be: (1) graduate students in good standing who have been in residence for at least one semester (2) preferably experienced as a GHS panelist (3) able to serve for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus. 21. GA POSITION IN VT TRiO PROGRAMS – 1st posting
This position will be directly reporting to the Associate Director of VT TRiO Upward Bound Programs. The graduate assistant can be expected to provide students on an individual and group basis to assess students’ progress on both federally mandated and individual progress goals, assist with chaperoning activities (college tour trips, Saturday Sessions, Summer Component family orientation, etc.), provide tutoring when appropriate, and create and implement programming. 22. GA POSITION FOR MONUMENTS ACROSS APPALACHIAN VIRGINIA PROJECT – 2nd posting
The Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia project will work collaboratively with community members, local organizations, artists, scholars, and educators to document and display histories and experiences that have been silenced, denied, or excluded by existing monuments that dominate public spaces. New monuments in Appalachian Virginia and in Eastern Siouan lands more broadly will encourage the commemoration of resistance and civic engagement. The responsibility of the graduate assistant is to provide support for the activities and initiatives of the Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia project, a joint project of the Center for Refugee, Migrant, and Displacement Studies and the Appalachian Program at Virginia Tech funded by the Mellon Foundation. 23. GRA POSITION IN BIO-BASED MATERIALS CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT – 2nd posting
Research focus for the doctoral student assistant would include development, assessment, and delivery of two undergraduate level courses. One focused on analytical and technical skills and a second on leadership and communication skills. Additional opportunities include assisting with developing an educators’ network, collecting and analyzing data, and creating a project website for dissemination and discussion of results. 24. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON FEMALE RUNNERS – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effects of jumping exercises on bone health in female runners (IRB 22-168). As part of this study, you will be asked to consume a reduced-calorie diet that will be provided by the research team and participate in two phases of supervised treadmill runs and jumping exercises on 5 consecutive days. Study measurements will include body composition, bone density, VO2max, and exercise efficiency. Eligible participants must be a woman in good general health between the ages of 18-35 with a BMI between 18.5-25.0 kg/m2, non-smoker, regular menstrual cycle, not on birth control, can run at least 60-90 minutes per day for 5 consecutive days, not taking any medications that could affect study results, and not pregnant or lactating. Conversation Partners is a volunteer program sponsored by the Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute (LCI) offering international students spaces for intercultural exchange and opportunities to practice English. We are looking for VT students, faculty, or staff to be a Conversation Partner and participate in one-on-one conversations and/or activities for approximately 1 hour per week with a goal of at least 8 meetings throughout the semester. 27. ENDURANCE AND ULTRA-ENDURANCE ATHLETES NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY –2nd posting
We need highly active athletes (18-60 years of age) for a study examining the relationship between physical activity and total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567). This study will require 1 virtual meeting and 2 visits to the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at Virginia Tech, which will take approximately 6 hours. You will receive information on your body composition, aerobic capacity, and other health information.  Participants must be: active athletes (18-60 years of age),  non-pregnant, vaccinated for Covid-19, with a stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb.), and free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer. We look for endurance athletes who was completed in marathons, ultra-marathons or Ironman triathlons in the past year, with sustained high level of training for the past 6 months and with no recent injuries or other reasons that have changed the training volume. You will be entered in a drawing to compensate you for your time and effort with a 1 in 5 chance of being selected to receive $25 in the form of cash. 28. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR CORN SNACKS SENSORY STUDY  – 2nd posting
The Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (SEL) at Virginia Tech seeks participants willing to taste and group corn snack samples based on their similarities (IRB 22-1148). Panelists will taste four corn snack samples. The study will take place on Wednesday (1/18) and Thursday (1/19) at any time from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. The study will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. This study will be conducted in the HABB1 Building, 1230 Washington St SW, Blacksburg VA 24060. 29. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A FOCUS GROUP STUDY ON AUTOMATED VEHICLES – 2nd posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a focus group study to explore user opinions on automated driving and anxiety-inducing events. During the study, which will gather five participants at once, you will discuss with your peers regarding several aspects of automated driving and preferences for operating them. This project protocol was reviewed by the Virginia Tech Human Research Protections Program (#19-642). The eligibilities are 1) active driver with a valid license, 2) age 18+ with good health, and 3) normal vision and hearing. The study will last approximately one hour. Each participant will receive a compensation of $10 for participation. Are you a student, staff, or faculty member interested in being a part of the Equine Volunteer Program? No prior equine experience required! This program provides a safe environment to learn about equine handling, get your “horse fix”, hang out with the Hokie Horses, learn and practice skills such as routine handling of horses of all ages, nutritional management, health assessment, and barn upkeep, and meet others in the VT community! Volunteers are assigned to weekly feed shifts and provide daily care to horses at both the Campbell and Smithfield Equine Units, rotating every 2 weeks between the units.
