5. MII COVESTRO LECTURE: PLASTICS RECYCLING AND REDESIGN

We all encounter plastic every day, but much of it doesn’t get recycled, simply because it can’t – at least for now. Gregg Beckham is on a mission to change that. Beckham is a Senior Research Fellow at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and leads a large consortium of labs and universities dedicated to making plastics more sustainable by developing creative, effective methods for recycling them. Members of the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities are invited to attend Beckham’s upcoming talk, “Challenges and opportunities in plastics recycling and redesign.” The presentation will be given from 5:30 to 7:00pm on Tuesday, February 7th, in the Moss Arts Center Anne & Ellen Fife Theater. You’ve probably heard of the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and perhaps even the h-index. You know that citations are important to a scholar’s career and impact. However, there are many purposes and interpretations of these metrics, and deciphering their meaning can be a headache if you don’t have a general understanding of research impact metrics and research assessment. In this workshop, you will learn the differences between the many types of citation metrics, usage statistics, and altmetrics. You’ll learn where to find them, how to use them to your advantage, and how to avoid making common mistakes and/or unintentionally misusing these metrics. 24. GRADUATE STUDENTS NEEDED FOR TITLE IX ADVISORY BOARD -1st posting
The Office for Equity and Accessibility continually seeks to improve Virginia Tech’s Title IX process. Incorporating students’ experiences and insights is central to ensuring our process works. The purpose of the Board will be to provide comment and feedback on the university’s response to reports of gender based harassment and violence. The Board will meet 3-4 times each semester to hold discussions and provide feedback directly to the university’s Title IX Coordinator. Issues for discussion may include: review of university’s policies and procedures; review of resources available to students; and a review of the university’s communication and outreach efforts, including safe.vt.edu. To gather a group with varied perspectives and experiences, student from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applications are now open for the 2023 Nanotechnology Entrepreneurship Challenge (NTEC)! Students must apply by Noon on National Inventors’ Day, February 11th. Projects that address global climate change are highly encouraged! Multiple cash and in-kind awards are available and all winning teams are encouraged to participate in the Virtual NNCI NTEC Accelerator Program. Regular NTEC teams receive up to $500 and NTEC teams affiliated with minority serving institutions can apply for an NTEC Diversity Award of up to $1,000 per team. The COVES (Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science Fellowship is a full-time summer fellowship program (May 22-August 11) operated by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (the Academy) and open to STEM graduate students. Fellows will receive training in science policy and science communication, spend time in legislative offices, executive agencies, companies or nonprofits in the state, and will be paired with an Academy mentor and involved in briefings, meetings and the Academy’s annual summit in August. The program includes a stipend. The Graduate School will submit five finalists for the fellowship program to the Academy, which will then choose one to represent the university in the program. 37. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR CLEAT PERFORMANCE AND PLANTAR LOADING STUDY – 1st posting
The Granata Lab at Virginia Tech is looking for participants in a research study (protocol IRB# 22-664). This research study aims to determine how performance and pressure forces of the foot are impacted by cleat type and sex assigned at birth. Once consented, participants will complete two short surveys and a series of agility tasks while wearing American football cleats and soccer cleats. The pedar-x insole system will be used to collect pressure force data during each agility task you complete. Participation involves one visit that will last approximately 75 minutes. Eligible participants must be between the ages of 18-30, wear a shoe size of men’s 7-12 (women’s 8.5-13.5), currently plays a cleated sport or has played a cleat sport in the last 3 years, have not had any lower extremity injuries in the last six months that limited physical activity for more than two days, and are not pregnant. Researchers from the Mind Music Machine lab are conducting research on enhancing art gallery visitors’ experiences using Audio AR technology. It will take less than 1 hour to participate in the experiment. Please note, it is not mandatory for students to sign up as a participant, and that their participation is completely voluntary. Participants will be compensated at a rate of $10/hr. either in cash or in research credits at the rate of 0.5 cr/hr. Participants will view paintings using a pair of eye-tracker lenses, and a pair of bone conduction earphones. After viewing each painting, they will answer some questions. Eligible participants are current Virginia Tech students 18 years of age or older, and with normal to corrected vision (no glasses but contact lenses are okay). International students at Virginia Tech are invited to take part in a research study to investigate the impact of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) workshops on faculty development in higher education. Survey results with non-identifiable information will be shared with faculty participants taking a UDL training program. There are no risks associated with participation in this study. 43. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON FEMALE RUNNERS – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effects of jumping exercises on bone health in female runners (IRB 22-168). As part of this study, you will be asked to consume a reduced-calorie diet that will be provided by the research team and participate in two phases of supervised treadmill runs and jumping exercises on 5 consecutive days. Study measurements will include body composition, bone density, VO2max, and exercise efficiency. Eligible participants must be a woman in good general health between the ages of 18-35 with a BMI between 18.5-25.0 kg/m2, non-smoker, regular menstrual cycle, not on birth control, can run at least 60-90 minutes per day for 5 consecutive days, not taking any medications that could affect study results, and not pregnant or lactating.
