Movies offer a unique lens to understand lived experiences and allow their viewers to immerse themselves in the lives of people who are similar or not. Participants will watch curated movies that speak to the rich tapestry that makes up the country. In celebration of APIDA Heritage Month, Saving Face offers a romantic comedic spin to the lengths families go to maintain their reputation or “save face”. Staff and community partners will facilitate educational discussions after the movie on related topics and themes around intergenerational relationships and history. 9. APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR GRAD HONOR SYSTEM CHAIR POSITION – 1st posting
The Graduate Honor System is seeking applications for the chair position. Applicants must be: (1) a graduate student in good standing who has been in residence for a minimum of one semester; (2) able to serve as chair for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus. Preferably, applicants should have experience as a GHS associate chair, facilitator, or panelist. 11. DOCTORAL CANDIDACY STATUS TUITION DISCOUNT PROCESS UPDATE – 3rd posting
Effective Fall 2025, the doctoral candidacy status tuition discount request will become an opt-out process. The Graduate School will automatically add the doctoral candidacy status tuition discount for any doctoral student who has passed their preliminary examination and meets all qualifications for the status, as well as remove the discount for any doctoral student not meeting all qualifications for the status. Any doctoral student qualifying who does not wish to utilize the tuition discount may submit the Candidacy Status Tuition Discount Opt-Out form no later than the last day to add course registration for the semester. Questions regarding this change in process can be directed to the Graduate School at grads@vt.edu.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program provides funding for Ph.D. candidates in the physical sciences to conduct part of their thesis research at a U.S. DOE National Laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity for accessing cutting-edge instrumentation and facilities that may enhance the research of your faculty and the training of your students. 18. SEEKING GRADUATE STUDENTS FOR A RESEARCH STUDY ON ORGANIZATIONAL MEMORY – 1st posting (1/1)
Echolab at Virginia Tech is seeking participants for an interview study on how university research labs manage their organizational memory—i.e., the collection of shared knowledge, practices, and resources that help members work more efficiently and effectively over time. We are especially interested in speaking with individuals who have experience with or insight into how lab knowledge is created, maintained, and/or passed on.
Participant qualifications:
– Currently part of a university research lab with more than 4 Ph.D. students,
– Be engaged in or interested in maintaining organizational memory within the lab. This includes practices such as:
– Developing and documenting lab policies, onboarding guidelines, or research tips
– Communication with the lab PI about various policies and maintaining organizational knowledge
– Assigning dedicated roles or responsibilities to lab members (e.g., literature curator, writing coach, lab wiki maintainer)
The interview will be conducted via Zoom or in-person if possible and will last approximately 45 minutes, up to 1 hour maximum. Participants who complete the interview will be compensated with $20 in the form of wire transfer (Zelle, Venmo, Paypal) or Amazon gift card upon completing the entire study. 19. RISK FACTORS FOR A SECOND ACL INJURY (ACL-CARE) – 2nd posting
Join a paid research study at Virginia Tech. A single 90-minute in-person session and complete a 15-minute survey each month for 18 months to earn up to $320. Help us understand risk factors for a second ACL injury (VT IRB: 21-612). Inclusion criteria are: having undergone primary ACL reconstruction, are between 14-25 years old, and planning to return to any level of sports (recreational, intramural, high school, college, etc.). 20. VIRGINIA TECH RESEARCH CALLS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS TO PARTICIPATE IN A STUDY INVESTIGATING CYBER SCAMS – 3rd posting
Virginia Tech research (IRB #25-305) is investigating scam vulnerability and the availability of scam prevention resources among international students and scholars. Participants will take part in a brief (15-minute) survey that explores vulnerabilities, access to scam prevention resources, support systems, communities, and scam victimization among international students and scholars. The project also aims to empower international students, scholars, and communities and help VT develop resources for these communities. The survey will be fielded from March 21st until the end of the spring term. Participants who complete the survey will be granted the opportunity to participate in an optional follow-up interview elaborating on the survey topics. Interested parties must:

28. HANDS-ON DIGITIZING TEXTS WITH MACHINE LEARNING AND AI

Are you interested in extracting text from scanned images—even poor quality images—and learning more about new advances in optical character recognition (OCR)? Join us for a 3-hour workshop on utilizing machine learning and large language models to programmatically OCR images of text. The workshop will take participants through running Python code in collaborative notebooks to access a variety of tools used to OCR texts, including texts that might be poorly scanned or otherwise difficult to read. This is a participatory workshop and you will have the opportunity to practice along with the instructors, as well as applying skills in exercises on your own. Topics will include an overview of the incoming class of first-year students, integrating peer support in your curriculum, technology-enhanced learning, growth-based grading, student motivation, and tackling controversial topics with confidence. It’s free, lunch and refreshments are included, and participants will be eligible to receive up to 12 PDN credits! Are you a graduate student planning to start or continue working on your research project over the summer? If so, join the University Libraries for a virtual research intensive workshop led by VT librarians and designed with graduate students in mind. In this workshop, you’ll learn more about searching for library resources for literature reviews, using citation managers, writing conference proposals and abstracts, and AI tools that can help your research process. This interactive Zoom workshop will build in time for discussion and questions. It will be held June 3 from 1-4 pm and June 4 from 10 am-12pm.
