12. VT LINUX LAPTOP ORCHESTRA RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS – 1st posting
The experimental ensemble is open as a 1-credit hour elective (MUS3314, listed under Prof. Bukvic, CRN 85300) to all VT students. Students engaging in the course will be given an opportunity to participate in a cutting-edge performance ensemble and explore latest technologies without the need of prior musical training. 14. PERFORMANCES SOUGHT FOR GOBBLERFEST – 2nd  posting

20. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR PROGRAM FOR MOTHERS ON STRESS MANAGEMENT & HEALTHY EATING – 1st posting
Participation involves attending four weekly meetings lasting 1.5 hours, a focus group, and a phone interview four weeks later. You will be asked to fill out surveys about your eating behavior and experience of stress at the beginning and end of the study, along with saliva samples and body measurements. The weekly sessions will focus on managing stress, slowing down, and healthy food. The focus group and interview will help researchers learn more about your experience in the program. You may be eligible to participate if you are: a mother 18 or older with a child 5 years or younger living in your home; not currently pregnant or breastfeeding; not participating in a weight loss program or diet. A VT research team is conducting a study regarding doctoral students’ experiences in working on a literature review. The survey includes questions about your program experiences while working on the literature review phase of your doctoral program. Participation in this study will inform researchers regarding ways to help make writing a literature review a better experience for students in the future. 22. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY EXAMINING HEART RATE IN AUTISM – 1st posting
Participants between the ages of 5-8 are sought for a research study investigating heart rate and restricted repetitive behaviors in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Researchers are recruiting children with an ASD diagnosis as well as typically developing children. Participation requires a 1-hour laboratory visit from the participant and their parent. The child will be asked to watch a video while wearing a heart rate monitor and a parent will be asked to fill out a packet of questionnaires regarding their child’s health history and behavior. Participants will receive a $20.00 gift card as compensation for their 1-hour laboratory visit. 25. MALE AND FEMALE PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR COFFEE RESEARCH STUDY – 3rd (updated) posting
Both male and female participants of 18-24 years of age are now being sought for a study examining the effects of caffeine on the mind and body. Must be: a healthy regular consumer of moderate amounts of coffee, a non-smoker, right-handed, free of neurological disorder or cardiovascular disease. Activities: Two morning sessions (~1 hour & 45 minutes each) and two afternoon sessions (~30 minutes each) involving collection of non-invasive physiological measures, standard laboratory tasks, and completion of questionnaires. Participant compensation is $25 per session, plus a $15 bonus for completion of all phases of the study, plus a $10 bonus for successful completion of memory tasks (up to $125 total). VTSIL is looking for highly motivated grad student help develop code for collecting and processing data from a data acquisition network. This is an opportunity to work with cutting edge data acquisition systems and a unique test bed, gain valuable experience with real-world data collection and data management, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of students and professors. The Division of Student Affairs Human Resources (DSA HR) office is searching for a graduate student to assist with instructional design and assessment work for training and development programs in the DSA. Male participants of 18-24 years of age are sought for a study examining the effects of caffeine on the mind and body. Must be: a healthy regular consumer of moderate amounts of coffee, a non-smoker, right-handed, free of neurological disorder or cardiovascular disease. Activities: Two morning sessions (~1 hour & 45 minutes each) and two afternoon sessions (~30 minutes each) involving collection of non-invasive physiological measures, standard laboratory tasks, and completion of questionnaires. The Bridges to the Baccalaureate Scholars Program is looking for graduate students to serve as mentors for students interested in biomedical and behavioral sciences. This program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a means to promote diversity and inclusion in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Students are paired with mentors for fall semester to help with acclimating to VT, discuss research as a potential avenue for a career option, and have conversations about setting goals and professional development. Mentors are given an introduction to the program with the mentor coordinator and a list of topics to cover for the semester. Mentors are required to meet in person bi-weekly with their mentees and check in via email on the off weeks. 18. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR MUSCLE FATIGUE AND RECORVERY STUDY – 3rd posting

Volunteers are sought for dissertation research study about the effects of different physical demands on muscle fatigue. Participants will perform a set of tasks, requiring forceful exertions of the hand, forearm, and/or upper arm.  Muscular strength will be measured by voluntary contraction and electrical stimulation of muscles.  Other measures will be related to performance and muscle fatigue by monitoring the muscle activity using EMG electrodes. Experiments will be conducted in the Safety Engineering Laboratory in the ISE department. The complete experiment involves up to 7 experimental sessions, each requiring about 4 hours. Participants are paid $10/hour and a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Must be age 18-30;  males and females; no current or recent history of a physical disorder affecting the hand/arm; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week). 3. SHORT STAT COURSE: USING MIXED EFFECTS MODELS TO QUANTIFY DEPENDENCY AMONG REPEATED MEASURES

The Bridges to the Baccalaureate Scholars Program is looking for graduate students to serve as mentors for students interested in biomedical and behavioral sciences. This program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a means to promote diversity and inclusion in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Students are paired with mentors for fall semester to help with acclimating to VT, discuss research as a potential avenue for a career option, and have conversations about setting goals and professional development. Mentors are given an introduction to the program with the mentor coordinator and a list of topics to cover for the semester. Mentors are required to meet in person bi-weekly with their mentees and check in via email on the off weeks. 20. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR MUSCLE FATIGUE AND RECORVERY STUDY – 2nd posting

Volunteers are sought for dissertation research study about the effects of different physical demands on muscle fatigue. Participants will perform a set of tasks, requiring forceful exertions of the hand, forearm, and/or upper arm.  Muscular strength will be measured by voluntary contraction and electrical stimulation of muscles.  Other measures will be related to performance and muscle fatigue by monitoring the muscle activity using EMG electrodes. Experiments will be conducted in the Safety Engineering Laboratory in the ISE department. The complete experiment involves up to 7 experimental sessions, each requiring about 4 hours. Participants are paid $10/hour and a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Must be age 18-30;  males and females; no current or recent history of a physical disorder affecting the hand/arm; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week). 13. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR DRIVER-TO-DRIVER COMMUNICATION DEVICE STUDY – 3rd posting
Grad students are invited to take part in a study investigating the use of a hypothetical device that would allow drivers to exchange messages with other drivers. You will watch some short videos of driving simulator software and then fill in questionnaires about the videos you’ve just watched. Participation in the study is about 50 minutes in Whittemore 530; compensation is $10 (Amazon voucher). Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years and have had most of your driving experience in the US. All users of electricity on the VT campus are asked to curtail the usage of electricity to the greatest extent possible. The purpose of this exercise is to see how much electric usage can be curtailed and how quickly it can be done. Suggestions on how to power down:

  • Turn off lights in offices, common areas, and hallways
  • Turn off personal computers and peripherals not in use
  • Turn off shared electronics such as televisions, projectors, copiers, printers, fax machines when not in use
  • Unplug appliances such as coffee makers, refrigerators, washers/dryers, cooking appliances
  • Turn off laboratory equipment not in use.

10. SUMMER II QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS COURSE OFFERED – 3rd posting
The Educational Research and Evaluation program offers EDRE 6605: Quantitative Research Methods I in Summer 2, taught by Dr. Chosang Tendhar. EDRE 6605 is the first of a two-semester, year-long sequence, designed to provide an overview of basic research design, measurement, and statistical concepts in social and behavioral research. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the process of social and educational research in field settings, hands-on experience of designing and conducting research, and analysis of data. This doctoral level introductory research method course is usually taken by graduate students from departments such as business, psychology, sociology, education, and human development. 16. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR MUSCLE FATIGUE STUDY –  3rd posting
Participants are sought for an IRB-approved dissertation research study about the effects of different physical demands on muscle fatigue. Participants will perform a set of tasks, requiring forceful exertions of the hand, forearm, and/or upper arm. Muscular strength will be measured by voluntary contraction and electrical stimulation of muscles. Other measures will be related to performance and muscle fatigue by monitoring the muscle activity using EMG electrodes. Experiments will be conducted in the Safety Engineering Laboratory in the ISE department. The complete experiment involves up to 7 experimental sessions, each requiring about 4 hours. Participants will be paid $10/hour and a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Must be 18-30; male or female; no current or recent history of a physical disorder affecting the hand/arm; exercise on a regular basis (2-3/wk). 17. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY EXPLORING SOCIAL RECIPROCITY IN AUTISM – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study examining responses to a mood task. Participants may include individuals with or without a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder. Phase I involves questionnaires related to background, mood, and health. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to respond to an online questionnaire expected to last between 30 to 45 minutes. Based on your responses to the measures, you may or may not be contacted for participation in the second portion of the study, where you would be in a lab for approximately 1.5-2 hours. This will involve you thinking about mood states and expressing these mood states to another same-gender participant. During these tasks, heart rate measures will be recorded from electrodes placed on your skin. An experimenter will provide a tutorial to show you how to place the electrode strap around your torso. You will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires about your emotional experiences. Those eligible for the second part of the study will be contacted by email and will receive $30 in cash, and extra credit, when applicable.
