16. GRAD RESIDENTIAL FELLOW (GRF) OPENINGS IN WEST AJ RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE – 2nd posting
The West AJ Residential College is a community of 850 multi-generational students ranging from first-year to graduate from all academic disciplines. The GRF is a live-in position with responsibilities that include:  strong presence in the "house" and residential college; know each student living in the house; coordinate activities and experiences that facilitate community and serve the goals of the Residential College; serve as a role model; assist Faculty Principal and Associate Faculty Principal; serve as advisor for House Council; use the provided major on-campus meal plan to attend weekly House Dinners at the D2; facilitate the room and selection process; participate in trainings and meetings; other duties as assigned. Must invest min. 10 hrs/wk within house community; must be FT VT grad student in good academic standing, and have strong affinity for working with people within a residential setting. An interest in strengthening the academic/ intellectual undergraduate experience for a diverse array of students is required. GRFs receive a single room and a major on-campus meal plan and are appointed for a 1-year term, but are eligible for re-appointment for another 1-year term, based on performance. Ideally, a GRF serves in the position for 2 consecutive years. VT researchers are seeking lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer youth and young adults age 13-21 to participate in a project exploring the decision to come out to family as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer.  The questionnaire and in-depth interview take approximately 2-2.5 hours and participants will receive a $20 gift card. SHORT STATS COURSES FOR GRADS: DESIGNING EXPERIMENTS
Tuesday, Mar 17, 4:00-6:00pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall
The goal of any scientific experiment is to maximize information gain, while minimizing the cost of the experiment. Taught by Justin Loda, this short course will discuss the three fundamental principles of experimental design (randomization, replication, and local control of error) and their relative importance in designing a useful experiment. Participants will also discuss some commonly designed experiments, such as randomized complete block and split-plot designs, as well as some more advanced. Anyone with little to no background in basic statistical techniques who are interested in acquiring an introduction to experimental design are welcome. SHORT STATS COURSES FOR GRADS – SPRING 2015 SCHEDULE
LISA (Virginia Tech’s Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) provides a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. Registration is required, but all courses are free. Spring 2015 Schedule:

The West AJ Residential College is a community of 850 multi-generational students ranging from first-year to graduate from all academic disciplines. Participants are sought for a 2-m long research study to observe the use of ambient displays for personal task management information. This study involves the use of an iPad to showcase your Google Calendar events and to-do list activities in an interactive visualization for your use. Over the course of the 8-week study, you will be asked to participate in surveys and interviews to allow researchers to learn about your use of our ambient display system. Upon completion of the study, an interview will take place and iPads will need to be returned. During the study, you will participate in 3 surveys and 1 interview per week, for a total of 24 surveys and 8 interviews. 2. SHORT STATS COURSES FOR GRADS: GRAPHICS IN R

The R programming package offers a powerful, flexible, and free platform which can be used to produce publication-quality graphics. Taught by Adam Edwards, this short course will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, and scatter plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. The lecture component will cover pros and cons of various graphics and approaches, and the computer portion will allow attendees to write, modify, and execute R codes to produce graphics based on these data. This session is the second part of a three-course series which assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language, and is intended for researchers who want to gain basic exposure to R with the goal of incorporating R into their research programs. Participants are sought for a 2-m long research study to observe the use of ambient displays for personal task management information. This study involves the use of an iPad to showcase your Google Calendar events and to-do list activities in an interactive visualization for your use. Over the course of the 8-week study, you will be asked to participate in surveys and interviews to allow researchers to learn about your use of our ambient display system. Upon completion of the study, an interview will take place and iPads will need to be returned. This study utilizes techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to assist adolescents (ages 11-14) who are dealing with problems related to rejection by peers. Participants will complete a series of psychological measures and five weekly intervention sessions, with some brief opportunities for at-home practice. There is slight risk to participating, given the sensitive nature of the subject matter and the time commitment. However, participants will be compensated for their time and participation and will also benefit by learning new coping skills. All foreign nationals in F or J non-immigrant status must complete a US tax return.  Forms W-2 and 1042-S prepared by Virginia Tech can be accessed through HokieSpa, if you received compensation from either a job (i.e. wage position; GRA; GTA) or a fellowship payment paid as a stipend through payroll. The Cranwell Center purchased the international tax return software to help foreign nationals in a non-resident tax status. There is a nominal charge for password set-up, but the software can be accessed from any computer with internet access. Complete the Tax Form Questionnaire to request an access code to the software. Allow three business days for processing.

This study utilizes techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to assist adolescents (ages 11-14) who are dealing with problems related to rejection by peers. Participants will complete a series of psychological measures and five weekly intervention sessions, with some brief opportunities for at-home practice. There is slight risk to participating, given the sensitive nature of the subject matter and the time commitment. However, participants will be compensated for their time and participation and will also benefit by learning new coping skills. 14. JOIN ITRAAB ARABIC MUSIC ENSEMBLE – 2nd posting
Itraab Arabic Music Ensemble, whose name means "creating enchantment through music," invites the musically inclined to join the preparations to present at the VT Center for the Arts Islamic Worlds Festival on Apr 11, 2015. Learn vocal pieces from various parts of the Arab world and basic percussion skills on the frame drum. Instruments will be provided for use. Musical experience is a plus, but not necessary. People who already play Arabic musical instruments (`ud, nay, qanun, violin, darabukka, etc.) are encouraged to contact the instructor if interested in performing on these instruments. The Language and Culture Institute (CLI) offers a new program that allows international spouses and partners of VT students, employees and other affiliates to take reduced-rate English classes. The English Language Program for International Spouses/Partners provides instruction to individuals in F-2, H-4, and J-2 statuses. Classes are offered during two 8-9 week sessions and offer instruction in all skill areas — including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and pronunciation — from beginning through advanced proficiency levels. 24. FAMILIES AND CHILDREN SOUGHT FOR MINDFULNESS STUDY – 1st posting
VT researchers are looking for families with children ages 7-10 to participate in a study on physiological responses to parent and child interaction. This study involves a 45-min visit to the VT Autism Clinic. You will be asked to complete questionnaires and then participate in an activity with your child. Researchers will collect physiological information from mothers only. Participating children will receive a small toy and parents will be entered in a raffle for three $50 gift cards as compensation. The speakers, Drs. Craig and Sharon Ramey, are internationally known for researching the effects of impoverished environments and poverty on early childhood brain development and cognition. They will   present their recent findings on the intergenerational and lifelong effects of impoverished environments, and the extent to which systematic, theory-driven interventions (tested via randomized controlled trials and multi-site observational studies) produce improved health outcomes linked to morbidity and mortality.  As their work is highly interdisciplinary and integrates the fields of biology, psychology, sociology and human development, these talks will be of interest to graduate students from a broad range of departments.

GRAD 4514 Water for Health Seminar (1 cr; CRN 20121) is offered Spring 2015, as part of the Water INTERface IGEP and is open to any graduate students with interests in health, nutrition, environment, and water. Taught by Susan Duncan (FST) and Water INTERface faculty, the course will explore emerging nterdisciplinary issues related to the chemistry, biology, and engineering of drinking water; nutritional and aesthetic values of water and its role in controlling disease and promoting good health; methods of processing poor quality water to drinking water standards; subsequent changes in chemical, biological, nutritional, and palatability characteristics; implications for food preparation, processing, and safety and other consumer uses of water, and more.

4. HOW DO I SUPPORT? RESPONDING TO STUDENT DISCLOSURES OF GENDER-BASED SEXUAL VIOLENCE

This event is an opportunity to discuss how one can respond in supportive ways when a student (or colleague or friend) discloses experiences of gender-based sexual violence. The goal is to offer an opportunity to engage in dialogue on this topic about how to balance compliance with Title IX responsibilities and the desire to respond in the most supportive manner possible to disclosures of sexual or relationship violence. Members of the Women’s Center Counseling and Advocacy Team will facilitate a conversation on ways to provide support even if you are required to report a sexual assault. Participants are needed for a study on the ways in which parents socialize their child(ren) into consumer roles. Parents will discuss the ways in which they teach and train their children about spending and saving money, shopping, and the value of money. The study consists of a single interview that will take approximately one hour or less. POVERTY, BIOLOGY AND HEALTH: WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN?

The speakers, Drs. Craig and Sharon Ramey, are internationally known for researching the effects of impoverished environments and poverty on early childhood brain development and cognition. They will   present their recent findings on the intergenerational and lifelong effects of impoverished environments, and the extent to which systematic, theory-driven interventions (tested via randomized controlled trials and multi-site observational studies) produce improved health outcomes linked to morbidity and mortality.  As their work is highly interdisciplinary and integrates the fields of biology, psychology, sociology and human development, these talks will be of interest to graduate students from a broad range of departments. 

THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF HEALTH, EDUCATION AND BIOLOGY: MLK’S ENDURING LEGACY

The internationally recognized speakers, Drs. Craig and Sharon Ramey, will address why eliminating health and educational disparities is a compelling and crucial goal for the future of our nation. Researchers in the VT Department of Human Development are conducting a study to investigate work and family in family businesses. They are looking for individuals who are (1) age 18 and older, (2) in a romantically involved, committed relationship for at least 1 year, and (3) both members of the relationship are involved in a family business. Participation would include a one-time survey that asks demographic information and completion of seven daily diaries that take about 30 minutes to complete. 10. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON CONSUMER SOCIALIZATION METHODS THAT PARENTS USE – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study on the ways in which parents socialize their child(ren) into consumer roles. Parents will discuss the ways in which they teach and train their children about spending and saving money, shopping, and the value of money. The study consists of a single interview that will take approximately one hour or less. To be eligible, participants must be a currently-married mother of a child aged 11-15 with whom they reside for at least half of each month. 11. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR RESEARCH PROJECT ON WORK AND FAMILY IN FAMILY BUSINESSES – 2nd posting
Researchers in the VT Department of Human Development are conducting a study to investigate work and family in family businesses. They are looking for individuals who are (1) age 18 and older, (2) in a romantically involved, committed relationship for at least 1 year, and (3) both members of the relationship are involved in a family business. Participation would include a one-time survey that asks demographic information and completion of seven daily diaries that take about 30 minutes to complete. 12. SURVEY PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DIGITAL TO-DO LIST RESEARCH – 3rd posting
Sheriff Jolaoso, master’s student in computer science, is looking for participants for his research on engagement with digital to-do tools such as calendars, to-do list apps, and email. Participation consists of completing a 22-question survey that asks questions about the digital to-do list tools you use and how you use them. Participants must be over 18 and use calendars, emails, and/or to-do list apps to maintain things you need to do in the future.
