 2. SHORT STAT COURSES SCHEDULE FOR SUMMER 2014: GRAPHICS IN R
Wednesday, Jul 2, 4:30-6:30pm. 1080 Torgersen Hall
Taught by Chris Franck, this session will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, and scatter plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. The lecture component will cover pros and cons of various graphics and approaches, and the computer portion will allow attendees to write, modify, and execute R codes to produce graphics based on these data. 5. DIVERSITY SENIOR FELLOW POSITION OPEN FOR 2014-15 – 1st posting
The Residential Colleges at Ambler Johnston (http://www.rescollege.housing.vt.edu/llc/waj/ and http://www.rescollege.housing.vt.edu/llc/hrc/) seek a graduate student to serve as a Diversity Senior Fellow. Successful candidate will academically mentor undergraduates living in the buildings and design modest programming around own research interests. 6. WAGE POSITION OPEN – 1st posting
Wage Position: OJS (Open Access Systems) consultant with advanced familiarity with Open Journal Systems (OJS), a journal management and publishing system software, needed to help the editor of Review of Middle East Studies, a campus-based journal, transition to digital publishing. Flat fee for one week to ten days working with the editors in July or early August to apply the features of OJS software to the workflow of the journal. 7. GLC STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER POSITIONS OPEN FOR FALL 2014 – 2nd posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. This includes providing excellent customer service, overall building management, reserving rooms, oversight of the welcome center, basic cleaning (wiping tables, vacuuming, etc.) and administrative support. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours. The theatre production program in the School of Performing Arts is seeking two FT graduate assistants (20 hrs/wk, Step 1, 9-month) for the 2014/15 academic.  The successful candidate must be available 1:00-5:30 pm M – F.
— Position #1 is in the scenic construction shop.  Required skills: Carpentry, experience with power tools and equipment, finishing work, painting, installation and assembly. Ability to listen and learn from senior shop technicians; work both independently and with others; read and understand technical design drawings. Preferred qualifications include: Proficiency in standard scenic fabrication techniques including welding and rigging.

12. PARENTS AND ADOLESCENTS WANTED FOR NUTRITION RESEARCH – 2nd posting
Children 12-18 and parents are needed for a study to determine the reliability and validity of a biomarker for beverage consumption and added sugar intake in adolescents. The study involves children completing beverage and theory-based questionnaires, food recalls, and two non-invasive fingerstick blood samples across 5 sessions; parents will complete three questionnaires on first visit. 3. SHORT STAT COURSES SCHEDULE FOR SUMMER 2014: STATISTICAL ANALYSIS IN R
Wednesday, Jun 25, 4:30-6:30pm. 1080 Torgersen Hall
Taught by Ian Crandell, this class is the second in a three-course series that assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language. Experience using R or attending Part I of this series is suggested but not required. The intended audience includes researchers who want to gain basic exposure to statistical analysis in R with the ultimate goal of incorporating R into their research programs. R is a free computing and graphical software/environment for statistical analysis. This course is designed to provide a basic statistical analysis in R using two data sets. The first data set comes from a study of low birth weights and includes 189 observations and various prediction variables. Analyses described include t-tests (one-sample, two sample, paired tests), ANOVA, generalized linear regression (logistic regression), and nonparametric tests. The second data set summarizes binary responses and six continuous predictors. The course includes a lecture portion covering statistical concepts and a computer lab component that covers usage of R to perform the analyses described above. Taught by Olawale Awe, this introductory course covers programming basics in R (a powerful, versatile, and free statistical programming language), including the definition and manipulation of data objects, loops, importing/exporting data, and simple data summaries. These concepts will be illustrated using both the Home Prices Data and also the National Longitudinal Mortality Survey. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components and attendees will have the opportunity to write, modify, and execute R codes for these data. 10. VT SPORT CLUB TEAMS LOOKING FOR COACHES – 3rd posting
The following VT sport club teams are looking for coaches for the upcoming school year:  VT Crew (rowing), Women’s Soccer, Women’s Lacrosse and Women’s Water Polo.  All 31 sport clubs are extremely competitive, and compete at the intercollegiate level against sport club teams from other colleges and universities around the region and throughout the country.  Sport clubs practice during the week and travel to tournaments or host home games/tournaments on weekends.  If you would like additional information about these coaching opportunities, please contact Alan Glick, Assistant Director of Recreational Sports, at aglick@vt.edu, 231-4058.

Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. 11. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 3rd posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview. Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. Preferred participants are undergraduate and graduate students from the Biological Sciences programs. Participants will verbalize their thinking about the website (positive and negative aspects about the website). At the end of the eye-tracking session, participants will fill out one online survey. 16. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 2nd posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview. Participants are needed for a VT study investigating different load carriage methods on flat and inclined surfaces, and how these methods influence injury risk. VT researchers seek study participants to help determine how people process information. Participants will be asked to play simple computer games using the keyboard and mouse in a two-hour experiment session. Participants will get $5 compensation for their time and $5 for completing a survey with the opportunity to receive up to an additional $25, based on performance on research tasks, depending on the outcome of choices made by all participants.  If you decide to take part in this study, you may be asked to view a variety of pictures that have been categorized to be pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant. The VT Industrial Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory will conduct a study examining the mechanics of the lumbar spine in healthy adults. Participants will work with a research assistant to twist and bend the subject’s torso within the limits of daily living. The Appalachian Foodshed Project (AFP) is working with communities, farmers, policymakers, non-profits, and institutions to better understand community food security in Appalachia.  Faculty involved with the AFP are planning a graduate-level Community Food Security Course to be offered to any graduate student interested in this topic from both a practitioner and scholarly perspectives.  To ensure this course meets student needs, your input is needed! For example:  What do you know about food security?  What do you want to know? What information do you need for a future career? There will be two focus groups for graduate students to discuss how the upcoming course should be designed. 26. USER-STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 3rd posting
Researchers will be studying how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system during one max. 2-hr session, including what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and times are flexible to adhere to your busy schedule. If selected for the study, you will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art, and you will be trained on how to use the system. For the experimental session, you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do during the training and experimental session. Afterwards, you will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Participants must be 18-64 years old, free of health detriments that could impede, delay or harm them in performing hand movements and completing questionnaires.
