2. FREE ANXIETY AND OCD SUPPORT GROUP AVAILABLE

Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Do you struggle with OCD? A free monthly support group meets the last Tuesday of every month. Join this support group at the Virginia Tech Psychological Services Center (3110 Prices Fork Road) to learn more about anxiety disorders and OCD, hear success stories from those who have worked to overcome their anxiety and OCD, and receive support in an informal setting. Family members are also welcome. 11. REGISTER NOW FOR TEAM DESIGN CONTEST FOR GRAD HOUSING COMPLEX – 1st posting
Exercise your imagination and creativity in a short design contest based on a real-world project that’s coming to Blacksburg. The challenge includes generating conceptual design and naming ideas for a new grad housing complex. Teams of up to three may compete for $100 gift certificates to local restaurants.  Background in architecture, landscape architecture or construction is helpful but not required. Paper, sketching tools and some modeling materials will be provided; teams may also use any tools and supplies they bring. The contest will take place on Friday, Sep 20, 1-5pm. Register here. 12. P.E.O. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FOR 2014-15
Local application deadline is Sep 16, 2013 for this merit-based $15K award for women in doctoral programs. Eligibility requirements: (1) must be nominated by a local P.E.O. chapter and must be a citizen of the US or Canada; (2) must be within two years of completing doctoral degree and have one full academic year of work left at the time of award payment (Aug 1, 2014); (3) must be enrolled full time in degree program at accredited college or university; (4) must demonstrate academic excellence, with a strong research path, publications, awards and service activities, have clearly defined career objectives, unique academic and global experiences, maturity,  and show promise of making a significant contribution to her field. 16. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY INITIATIVE (STPI) FALL DISCUSSION SERIES
Join the STPI for lunch and learn how your work can have a broader impact on society at this brown bag science policy discussion series. Bring your lunch and join in on lively discussions led by experts on topics such as science graduate education policy; water quality and the CDC/EPA; science, intellectual property and innovation policy; and cognitive enhancements, ethics, and policy implications. 17. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC PREFERENCES – 1st posting
This study aims to develop the fullest picture to date of people’s likes and dislikes in the field of music, examining music genre; the emotions that music arouse and personality, and how all these variables inter-relate. This study is the first to bring all of the variables together, allowing researchers to understand the relationships among variables and their impact. This study is organized by Queen’s University, an Irish University partnered with VT. Participation involves completing a number of questionnaires that are designed to measure a number of personal characteristics. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and you can withdraw at any stage. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. If interested, please contact Gerard Breaden-Madden, postgraduate research student, at gbreadenmadden01@qub.ac.uk to participate or to request more information. This study is closing soon and participants are needed urgently.

18. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR “iGENERATION: THINKING ABOUT OURSELVES” STUDY – 1st posting
Graduate students are needed for an anonymous online survey about their self-care and self-harm behaviors. The survey will be open through the end of the fall semester and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participants must be 18 or older. 19. PARTICIPATE IN GRAD HOUSING PREFERENCES SURVEY – 1st posting
Dedicated graduate student and graduate family housing has been a concern of graduate students, the GSA and the Graduate School for several years now. The Graduate School was contacted by local developers for thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. We have developed this survey to inquire about your interest and needs for graduate housing. A site has already been identified and the local developers intend to begin construction of new housing in the South Main Kroger vicinity within the next 18-24 months. The survey will take approximately 10-12 minutes to complete. The information you provide will help us better understand the housing needs of our current and future graduate student community. ICAT DIGITAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN
Saturday, Aug 17 and Aug 24, 1:00-5:00pm
The VT Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT), is organizing a workshop for children aged 8-11 on digital storytelling. Participants will try out a new story authoring system prototype that allows the creation of story scenes via enactment, practice story writing and engage in a basic electronics storytelling papercraft project. All materials and equipment will be provided.  Participants need to sign up for only one of the sessions. Researchers are looking for 4-4.5-year-old children to visit the lab for one to two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. Graduate student researchers are conducting a study to investigate how obstacles affect turning dynamics while walking. The study will take approximately 2-3 hours and will involve walking and turning around obstacles. 2. STATS SHORT COURSES THIS SUMMER: MODEL SELECTION IN R, FEATURING THE LASSO
Monday, Jul 22, 5:15-7:15 pm; 3060 Torgersen Hall Taught by Dr. Chris Franck, this short course will discuss model selection, the purpose of which is to identify a parsimonious model, one that is as simple as possible while maintaining good predictive ability over the outcome of interest. The lasso, or “least absolute shrinkage and selection operator,” provides a method of continuous subset selection. This short course includes lecture and computer laboratory components and covers more advanced content than other LISA short courses. Graduate student researchers are conducting a study to investigate how obstacles affect turning dynamics while walking. The study will take approximately 2-3 hours and will involve walking and turning around obstacles. Qualifications are: 18-45 years of age, no problems balancing, no history of dizziness, no recent injuries which affect normal walking or turning, and no concussions within the previous year. The VT Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT), is organizing a workshop for children aged 8-11 on digital storytelling. Participants will try out a new story authoring system prototype that allows the creation of story scenes via enactment, practice story writing and engage in a basic electronics storytelling papercraft project. 4. GLC CAFÉ

The GLC Café is offered throughout the year with free coffee, tea, and cookies in the company of your graduate-student and Grad-School colleagues. If the weather is nice (=not raining), the café may move out to the side patio on the Bookstore side of the GLC, behind the hedges. Lemonade and a game of cornhole? 5. WRITING CENTER SUMMER HOURS
The Writing Center is located in the Learning Commons (2nd floor of Newman Library). Summer hours are: Summer I May 28-Jul 3, 12:30-1:30 and 5:00-8:00pm Mondays-Thursdays. Summer II Jul 9- Aug 15, 6:00-8:00pm Mondays-Thursdays. To make an appointment stop by, or call 231-5436.

6. STATS SHORT COURSES THIS SUMMER
LISA (Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) is providing a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. 7. ON-CAMPUS GRAD HOUSING STILL AVAILABLE FOR 2013-14

8. FULBRIGHT APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistantships.  A candidate will submit a Statement of Grant Purpose defining activities to take place during one academic year in a participating country outside the U.S. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Grant lengths and dates vary by country. Please consult the specific country summary for details. The application is open at http://us.fulbrightonline.org/. VT deadlines: Jul 1 – Priority candidates; Sep 14 – Regular candidates. You will not need letters of recommendation, transcripts or affiliation letter(s) for the priority deadline. Priority candidates will be matched with a Fulbrighter (VT faculty or alumnus) mentor to help them continue to develop their content and prepare for the campus interview,  and will be interviewed before fall semester or during the first week of classes. Regular candidates will be interviewed the last week in September and will have less time to respond to feedback.

9. FOUR-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN SOUGHT FOR STUDY – 1st posting
The VT C.A.P. Lab in the Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Researchers are looking for 4-year-old children to visit the lab for about two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. In addition to the games, they are interested in collecting information about the physiological components of the children’s abilities to control their actions.  If you are interested in this study, please contact Amanda Watson by phone (research lab—231-2320) or by e-mail (watsonaj@vt.edu). 10. GRAD HOUSING SURVEY STILL OPEN
If you haven’t filled out the housing preferences survey yet, the Graduate School invites you to do it this week. Recently, the Graduate School was contacted by local developers for our thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. A site has already been identified and the local developers intend to begin construction of new housing in the South Main Kroger vicinity within the next 18-24 months. The survey will take approximately 10-12 minutes. The information you provide will help us better understand the housing needs of our current and future graduate student community.
