1. WEEKLY SERVICES IN THE GLC

  • GLC Café: 3:30-5:00 every Thursdays, Reading Room – year round!
  • Other regular GLC services are on hiatus for the summer. Career Services, the Writing Center and Cook Counseling will start their fall hours in the GLC next week.

If you need information or assistance before deciding on health insurance coverage for the academic year, stop by the Aetna Student Medical Insurance table in the GLC Lobby during one of the listed times to learn more.

3. GSA WELCOME BACK BBQ
Wednesday, Aug 21, 4:00-7:00pm, University Club (next to GLC on Otey Street)
Join members of the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) as they welcome (back) new and returning grad students to the VT campus.  Smoked pulled pork, chicken, ribs, sides, dessert, iced tea and lemonade will be provided.  Note that the front entrance to the University Club may be under construction.  If this is the case you may enter through the side front doors or the back.  There will be games and tents set up outside as well.  Please contact Mordecai Harvey, GSA VP of Programs at mordie02@vt.edu with any questions.

4. GLC CAFÉ – SKIPPING THIS WEEK FOR “MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME” EVENT Thursday, Aug 22
The GLC Café is offered throughout the year with free coffee, tea, and cookies in the company of your graduate-student and Grad-School colleagues, normally in the GLC reading room. This week, however, the café is replaced by the “Make yourself at home in Blacksburg” event. Please join new and returning students in the GLC Multipurpose Room, 4:30-6:00pm. Normal café hours will resume next week.

5. MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME IN BLACKSBURG

6. UNDERREPRESENTED GRADUATE STUDENT LUNCHEON

7. DOWNTOWN TOUR AND HAPPY HOUR
Friday, Aug 23, 5:30pm, meet in GLC Lobby
Learn about the popular restaurants and bars in Blacksburg and meet new people in the process:  current grad students will lead a short walking tour and give you an insider’s view of the social and cultural offerings of your new town and end at a local restaurant for a great happy hour.  A helpful and humorous guide to every establishment in town will be given to everyone who attends.  For more information contact Jordan Hill at jordanrh@vt.edu.

9. COS5984 (CRN 98676: GLOBAL ASPECTS OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW Find out how you can protect your idea, invention or any other intellectual creation and what this means to the rest of the world. International protection of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets will be covered as well as policy analysis of the globalised intellectual property “system”. 10. “GRAD” COURSES FOR FALL 2013
Web drop/add will start on Aug 10 for fall 2013. 11. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR PAYROLL DEDUCTION OF COMP FEES FOR GRAD ASSISTANTS
The registration system for paying comprehensive fees through payroll deduction now open.  Graduate students on an assistantship must either pay their comprehensive fees or enroll for payroll deductions no later than Sep 6, 2013.  To enroll in payroll deductions, login to Hokie SPA, choose University Account Information menu, and click on Graduate Students on Assistantship, enroll in Payroll Deduction. You must enroll in payroll deduction each semester in which you wish to take advantage of this opportunity. 

12. OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR STUDENT MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR 2013-14

13. THREE GRA POSITIONS OPEN FOR 2013-14 – 1st posting
Web Application Developer – The Enterprise Systems division of VT Information Technology is looking for 3 web application developers to work on various university projects. These are full-time, 12-month GRA positions that will begin in Aug 2013.  Must have Java or Groovy programming experience.  Candidates should forward resume and cover letter to es-jobs@vt.edu.

14. ONE TECHNICAL WRITER GRA POSITI0N OPEN FOR 2013-14 – 1st posting
The Enterprise Systems division of VT Information Technology is looking for a technical writer to develop internal documentation of applications, processes, and procedures.  This is a full-time, 12-month GRA position that will begin in Aug 2013.  The ideal candidate would have excellent writing and communications skills combined with a computing or information technology background.  Candidates should forward resume and cover letter to es-jobs@vt.edu.      

15. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GSA WELCOME BACK BBQ
The GSA is looking for volunteers to help with the Welcome Back BBQ on Wednesday, Aug 21 from 4:00-7:00pm at the University Club.  Volunteers will need to help with the serving of food for 30 minute shifts and will be provided food. 16. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON EMOTIONS, COGNITIONS, AND THE SELF – 3rd posting
Are you interested in learning a little bit about yourself? Participate in a study of emotions, cognitions, and the self.  This study will include an in-person lab session, for which you may sign up using SONA or by emailing the co-investigator (neville@vt.edu).  Participants who complete the study will be entered in a raffle to win a $25 gift certificate to Target.  In addition, if you are enrolled in a psychology course you may earn one point of extra credit.  Participants must be 18 or older, may not be current students of the primary investigator, Lee Cooper, or the co-investigator, Neville Galloway-Williams.  Contact Neville@vt.edu for further information. *Study Closing Soon*
