1.  WEEKLY SERVICES IN THE GLC  – SUMMER SCHEDULE
Weekly services are on hiatus in the summer, except for the café. However, career advising, counseling, and writing support are available at each service’s home location in the Career Services Center, Cook Counseling and Newman Library respectively.

  • GLC Café: 3:30-5:00 every Thursday, Reading Room or GLC side patio – year round!
  • Graduate School summer hours: M-F: 9:00am-4:00pm

 2. SHORT STAT COURSES SCHEDULE FOR SUMMER 2014: GRAPHICS IN R
Wednesday, Jul 2, 4:30-6:30pm. 1080 Torgersen Hall
Taught by Chris Franck, this session will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, and scatter plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. The lecture component will cover pros and cons of various graphics and approaches, and the computer portion will allow attendees to write, modify, and execute R codes to produce graphics based on these data. 3. GLC CAFÉ: LEMONADE EDITION – BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

4. P.E.O. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS AVAILABLE – 3rd posting

5. DIVERSITY SENIOR FELLOW POSITION OPEN FOR 2014-15 – 1st posting
The Residential Colleges at Ambler Johnston (http://www.rescollege.housing.vt.edu/llc/waj/ and http://www.rescollege.housing.vt.edu/llc/hrc/) seek a graduate student to serve as a Diversity Senior Fellow. Successful candidate will academically mentor undergraduates living in the buildings and design modest programming around own research interests. Student will receive his/her own office, small programming budget, staff support, and some meals. Preference for PhD student with diversity/inclusion training. One-year appointment. 6. WAGE POSITION OPEN – 1st posting
Wage Position: OJS (Open Access Systems) consultant with advanced familiarity with Open Journal Systems (OJS), a journal management and publishing system software, needed to help the editor of Review of Middle East Studies, a campus-based journal, transition to digital publishing. Flat fee for one week to ten days working with the editors in July or early August to apply the features of OJS software to the workflow of the journal. 7. GLC STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER POSITIONS OPEN FOR FALL 2014 – 2nd posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. This includes providing excellent customer service, overall building management, reserving rooms, oversight of the welcome center, basic cleaning (wiping tables, vacuuming, etc.) and administrative support. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours. 8. PART-TIME COACHING POSITION IN UNIV STUDIES STARTING IN AUG – 2nd posting
University Studies Academic Coaching Program is seeking a graduate student for a part-time coaching position. Applicants should be graduate students in good academic standing who can start in mid-August. The position includes working with undergraduate students in creating individualized goals with time management, problem solving, and academics. 9. TWO GRAD ASSISTANTSHIPS OPEN IN THEATRE PRODUCTION IN SOPA – 2nd posting
The theatre production program in the School of Performing Arts is seeking two FT graduate assistants (20 hrs/wk, Step 1, 9-month) for the 2014/15 academic.  The successful candidate must be available 1:00-5:30 pm M – F.
— Position #1 is in the scenic construction shop.  Required skills: Carpentry, experience with power tools and equipment, finishing work, painting, installation and assembly. Ability to listen and learn from senior shop technicians; work both independently and with others; read and understand technical design drawings. Preferred qualifications include: Proficiency in standard scenic fabrication techniques including welding and rigging.
— Position #2 is in the costume construction shop. Required skills: Ability to read and understand costume designs and assemble patterns; basic experience with sewing and stitching; listen and learn from faculty and staff supervisors; work both independently and with others.  Preferred qualifications include: Proficiency with fabric cutting, draping, patterning, fitting and costume crafts.  Submit a C/V or resume, and a letter of interest (with the email subject heading "Application for Position #1 (Scenic Assistant)" or "Application for Position #2 (Costume Assistant)". 11. REFERENCE LIBRARY ASSISTANT POSITIONS (4) OPEN – final posting
The University Libraries are accepting applications for four Reference Library Assistant (RLA) positions for the 2014-2015 academic term. The RLA positions (see http://www.lib.vt.edu/libnews/2014/2014-07-09.html ) will be scheduled to work at the second floor Reference Assistance desk. RLAs work an average of 8-12 hrs/wk at $15.00/hour; this is a wage position with no tuition waiver. Hours determined upon hire. Successful applicants are expected to be able to work weekends and weeknights (until 12:00 midnight). 12. PARENTS AND ADOLESCENTS WANTED FOR NUTRITION RESEARCH – 2nd posting
Children 12-18 and parents are needed for a study to determine the reliability and validity of a biomarker for beverage consumption and added sugar intake in adolescents. The study involves children completing beverage and theory-based questionnaires, food recalls, and two non-invasive fingerstick blood samples across 5 sessions; parents will complete three questionnaires on first visit.
