2. GLC CAFÉ

Enjoy free coffee, tea, and cookies in the company of fellow graduate students and Grad School staff; network, socialize, relax! Bring your own mug if you can. The café will move to the Graduate School lobby and patio for the summer while the elevator is being replaced.

3. MATERIALS REQUESTED FOR WELCOME WEEK INFORMATION FAIR – 1st posting
Do you provide a service (editing? catering?) other grad students would be interested in?  Looking for a new drummer for your band? Is your student organization recruiting new members? Here’s your chance to spread the word!  Send the Graduate School your flyers (quarter- or half-page only) by August 16 and they will be placed on information tables in the GLC for Graduate Student Welcome  Week (August 21-25). 4. HOW TO CELEBRATE SOLAR ECLIPSE – 1st posting
There are grad students for whom the solar eclipse represents a wonderful research opportunity, but if you are not one of them, how would you celebrate this rare occurrence? 5. GRAD 5024 DATA MANAGEMENT SKILLS 1 CR CLASS OPEN – 2nd posting
Virginia Tech Libraries is offering an 8-week version of GRAD 5024 this fall in collaboration with James Madison University. The class will begin on 8/31  and end on 10/19, and is offered pass/fail.  Class times are 10am-12pm on Thursdays. Enrollment is open and 11 more seats remain. Topics will include: Data Management Plans (DMPs), data security, data organization, data citations, ethical use of data, publishing datasets, and metrics of impact. Register through HokieSPA drop/add (note that the course listing incorrectly shows this as a full-semester class).

VT’s Office of Academic Decision Support is looking for a Graduate Assistant for Fall 2017 to assist with the development and maintaining of SQL-Server apps. Must have expertise in SQL, T-SQL, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and excellent work ethic, dependable, and good oral and written communication skills. 8. GA OPENING IN OFFICE OF ACADEMIC DECISION SUPPORT I – 3rd posting
VT’s Office of Academic Decision Support is looking for a Graduate Assistant for Fall 2017, 20 hrs/wk. Responsibilities include: designing and developing (UI/UX) web-applications. Must have: strong and verifiable UI/UX design and web programming skills; knowledge of web markup and scripting languages: HTML5, CSS3, Javascript and jQuery; experience in translating mockups to code; demonstrated evidence in UI/UX design and development; evidence of creativity and innovation; ability to work in collaborative environment; excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred skills: knowledge of server-side CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS; experience with web frameworks; web app design and development experience. 10. FULL TIME GA POSITION IN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION – INCLUSION & DIVERSITY – 3rd posting
Position supports the Director of Alumni Relations for Diversity and Inclusion, planning and implementing alumni events, communicating professionally with alumni and other stakeholders, managing volunteers, and other office tasks as assigned. 11. VOLUNTEER AT THE BBURG FARMER’S MARKET – 2nd posting
Volunteers are needed at the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market to help run the information booth on market days during the summer. The market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays and shifts are three hours each. Wednesday, the market is open 12:00 to 6:00 pm and the shifts are 12:00 to 3:00 pm and 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Saturday, the market is open from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and the shifts are 8:00 am to 11:00 am and 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Farmer’s Market is near Squires and the GLC. 12. GRAD STUDENT VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR WELCOME WEEK AND ORIENTATION – 3rd posting
The Graduate School is looking for graduate student volunteers (graduate ambassadors) to assist with international graduate student check-in (Aug 7-25), GTA training (Aug 22), the Welcome Center and New Graduate Student Orientation in the GLC (Aug 21-25). Roles include: check-in and registration assistance; information and guidance to attendees; Welcome Center staffing; orientation crowd control; student panel in orientation; program set up, and more. 13. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR WEARABLE EXOSKELETON STUDY – 3rd posting
Students are invited to participate in a study about a wearable exoskeleton. Participants will be asked to perform simulated assembly tasks (e.g., manual drilling and wiring), both with and without the upper-extremity exoskeleton. Two experimental sessions (~3-4 hour long) are required to complete the study. Compensation: $10/hour.
