6. “WAR STORIES” VISITING SPEAKER SERIES
Thursday, Nov 14, 5:00-6:30pm, New Classroom Building 203
On behalf of the VT History Department, grad student Jessica Brabble invites you to a public lecture, “Donuts and Dancing: Entertaining America’s Wartime Military,” by Kara Dixon Vuic, Benjamin W. Schmidt Professor of War, Conflict, and Society in Twentieth-Century America at Texas Christian University. Beginning in World War I, the U.S. military sent “good girls” from home to boost the morale and comfort the spirits of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. On the surface, these young women epitomized an idealized home front for which the men fought and hoped to return. Yet, as this talk will reveal, USO girls, YMCA Lassies, and Red Cross Donut Dollies struggled mightily to serve donuts and soothe souls, to balance their wholesome image with the expectations of lonely men far from home.

Course Description: An integral part of the Graduate School’s Transformative Graduate Education initiative, the course will examine university-community engagement from perspectives of pedagogy, research, and outreach, enabling students to understand how their disciplinary expertise can be applied to advance social well-being. 15. GSA GRAD RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FALL CYCLE OPENING 11/4 – 2nd posting
The GRDP is a program administered by the GSA to provide monetary support for research conducted by Virginia Tech graduate students. This funding opportunity is available to graduate students in two cycles for each academic year. All full-time registered graduate students enrolled at Virginia Tech are eligible to apply. Assistance through the GRDP is competitive and is awarded based on a review process to help ensure fair decisions. The Fall Cycle application will open beginning Monday, Nov 4. 19. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LEGIBILITY STUDY – 1st posting
Volunteers needed for a legibility study to test the performance of several fonts on highway guide signs to be held between Nov 11-13. To participate, you must be 18 years of age or older, be a US resident, hold a valid US driver’s license and currently drive within the US. During study, you will be asked to perform the following: read and sign an Informed Consent Form; show the experimenter your valid driver’s license; complete some vision tests; and read 6-letter words that appear for a brief time on a computer screen. The total experiment will last approximately 30 minutes. No compensation provided, but you would be contributing to the field of transportation engineering by providing necessary data to create safe standards for road signs. 20. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EXOSKELETON AND WALKING STUDY – 1st posting
Participants needed for a research study about walking with and without wearable exoskeletons. Must be 18-35 years old with no recent or prior musculoskeletal disorders/injuries. Will be asked to perform separate trials of level walking on the treadmill and on an approx.10 meter long gait track, both with and without wearing several different exoskeletons. This study includes 2 sessions: each session will take about 2.5 hours and will be scheduled on separate days. The compensation rate is $10/hour. If interested, email Jangho Park at jhparkvt@vt.edu.

21. FEMALE PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
The current study is examining communication of emotion between two female participants while heart rate and contractility measures are being collected via electrodes. The study will take place in Williams Hall 248 and 250 and sessions take approximately an hour and 45 minutes to complete. THREE ANNE FRANKS: A PLAY BY MAYA MACDONALD

This free play, directed by graduate student Courtney Surmanek, is about three people who audition to play Anne Frank in a production that could not obtain the rights to a single word from Anne’s diary. As interpretations vary, we begin to see the difference between who Anne Frank was and who we need her to be. With biting humor, this short play explores complications of privacy and authorship, appropriation, race and Jewish identity, and the performance of history.
