14. BEARS EYE VIEW CROWDSOURCING CAMPAIGN – 1st posting
Insight into the everyday lives of American Black Bears! The Wildlife Habitat & Population Analysis Lab’s crowdsourcing campaign is up and running! This research project works to better understand American Black Bear behavior and foraging ecology with camera collars (more information here!). Any support (including sharing this information!) is greatly appreciated to have a paid undergraduate student position over the coming summer. 15. FIWGSA 2022 WILDLIFE CALENDARS ARE ON SALE NOW – 1st posting
The Fish & Wildlife Graduate Student Association (FIWGSA) creates an annual calendar that highlights students’ work both in Virginia and around the world. Proceeds from the calendar sale support a guest speaker visit and fund professional outreach and events. FIWGSA works to mentor new graduate students, engages in outreach, and serves as an intermediary between graduate students and faculty. 16. GPSS TRAVEL FUND PROGRAM FALL CYCLE OPENING OCT 25 – 1st posting
Have you presented or plan to present at a conference between July 1, 2021 and October 31, 2021? The VT GPSS Travel Fund Program (TFP) will partially support the monetary costs associated with presenting at conferences including travel, lodging, meals, and registration. Awards this year are ranging from $300-$500 per person for in-person attended conferences, and up to $200 for virtual attendance. The Fall Cycle application will be open beginning Oct 25 — the deadline for application is Nov 5th. 17. FLIP THE FAIR EVENT RECRUITING PARTICIPANTS – SIGN UP BY OCT 22 – 2nd posting
The Flip the Fair Project is a flipped science fair where scientists create and present science-fair-style posters, which are judged by elementary school students (grades 3-5). These students will judge several categories, and the winners (as determined by the students) will receive prizes! The goal of this event is two-fold: one, to give children the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research from “real life” scientists; and two, to give scientists the opportunity to practice their science communication skills. This opportunity is open to graduate students, postdocs, and technicians! The flipped science fair will be held Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 1-3 p.m. at the Melrose Branch Library in Roanoke. We ask that all presenters be available from 12-4 p.m. that day. Transportation from Blacksburg to the event will be provided. We will be holding a science communication workshop and poster-making session on Friday, November 5, 1-5 p.m. for all presenters! If you are interested in presenting at the Flip the Fair event and attending the workshop, please fill out this Google form as soon as possible (sign-up ends October 22nd). 18. LITTLE HOKIE HAND-ME-DOWN ACCEPTING DONATIONS – 2nd posting
New or gently used clothes, books, toys, lactation aids, strollers, unexpired car seats, baby gear, diapers, etc are needed for the 8th annual Little Hokie Hand-Me-Down event. Items donated should be for children ages 0 to 10. This program is designed to benefit Virginia Tech graduate students and families. 20. RECRUITING MALE PARTICIPANTS FOR LOW SPEED SLED TEAST RESEARCH STUDY – 1st posting
The VT Center for Injury Biomechanics is recruiting male subjects (18-28 yrs) to participate in a research study investigating the effects of muscle bracing on occupant motion and forces during low speed sled tests, similar to pre-crash braking events and low-speed car crashes (IRB #17-1008). Participants will be asked to come in for one pretest visit (~1 hr) and two testing visits (~5 hrs each). During each testing visit, participants will be exposed to 4 sled tests while wearing a sleeveless t-shirt, tight fitting shorts, socks and shoes, a seat belt, mouth guards, and instrumentation attached to the skin with adhesive patches (all of which will be provided). These tests are similar to bumper car impacts. Compensation rate is $20/hr. Participants should be males approximately between 5’7″-5’11” and 160-177 lbs. Participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, be able to show valid proof of full vaccination, and be willing to wear a mask each visit. All members of the research team are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, can provide valid proof of full vaccination, and will be masked during the duration of each visit. 21. CHILDREN AGED 3-4 AND THEIR PARENTS OR PRIMARY CAREGIVERS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
The Children’s Emotions Lab in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at VT is looking for parents of preschool-aged children (3-4-year-old children) to participate in a new research study focusing on parenting behaviors and children’s emotions. To accommodate the current public health crisis, parents will complete online questionnaires about their own and their children’s behaviors and emotions. Follow-up participation opportunities are available. Participants will earn $5 for each participation opportunity and families who complete all opportunities will be entered into a drawing for an additional $50 gift card. 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY EXAMINING HOW CHOLINE INTAKE INFLUENCES HEALTH – 2nd posting
This study will require 5 visits to the lab, wearing a continuous glucose monitor for four days in total, consumption of a supplement or placebo at 4 time points, and a time commitment of approximately 12 hours. Participants must be: 18-65 years of age, not taking medications that influence the study results, not have severe obesity, non-smokers, not pregnant, without any major medical problems, without any known choline allergies, and fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are on a diuretic or are taking medications such as aspirin, antibiotics, prebiotics, and probiotics, you are not eligible for this study. You will receive information on your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other health information. You may receive up $100 to compensate you for your time. You will receive $20 for completing session 2, session 3, and session 4. After completing session 5 you will receive $40. There is no compensation for completing the first session. This session will begin with a discussion on how open access supports several aspects of the evidence synthesis process. We’ll explore the value of having open access sources to include in the synthesis itself and some challenges that must be overcome when searching and accessing sources that require institutional access or are fee-based. We will also address ways to utilize open access repositories (such as VTechWorks and Open Science Framework) to make your synthesis more transparent so that others can properly evaluate, replicate, or use your synthesis. Additionally, we will hear cases from folks who have used open access resources or repositories as a means to support their evidence synthesis projects.
