Conducting a comprehensive literature review can be overwhelming – but there are approaches and resources that can make this process easier. Join us for this 1.5-hour workshop where we’ll discuss approaches to identifying essential information sources (e.g., academic databases) and designing a comprehensive search strategy. While this systematic approach comes from evidence synthesis review methods, it is transferable to any literature review. 8. GLC ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST – 1st posting
This fall’s contest theme is “Reunited.” Classes are mostly in-person, restaurants are open, and events are taking place. Life is starting to look a little closer to normal. Show us what you are glad to be reunited with after being away from it for so long. Is it family, friends, eating inside of a restaurant, going to a movie, the joy of community, attending an event or maybe just seeing someone besides your roommate? Reunited, and it feels so good! All submissions must be created or photographed by current graduate students. Submissions should include a short title and description/explanation of the entry. The One Health Working Group is happy to announce that we will be hosting the Annual One Health Case Competition virtually this year on Saturday, November 6th in celebration of International One Health Day. What is it? Teams comprising DVM, MPH, MD/DO, and PhD/MS (any field) students compete to solve cases using a One Health approach. 11. JOHN E. DOOLEY STUDENT ENGAGEMENT GRANT ACCEPTING PROPOSALS – 2nd posting
VT Engage: The Center for Leadership and Service Learning is excited to request proposals from students for the 2020-21 John E. Dooley Student Engagement Grant (JEDSEG). This grant is made possible by the generosity of many donors, and funds highly motivated students or student teams planning to implement community-based civic engagement projects. This year there is a total of $1,500 available (one $1500 grant or two, $750 grants) with an application deadline of October 10 at 11:59pm. 12. SURVEY ON RESEARCH ETHICS – 3rd posting
This fall, Virginia Tech will participate in the Survey of Organizational Research Climate (SOURCE), developed by the National Center for Principled Leadership & Research Ethics (NCPRE) and its partners. SOURCE is a validated instrument specifically designed to measure the climate of research integrity in academic organizations. The results of this survey will be used to evaluate and enhance VT policies, processes, and educational efforts around the responsible conduct of research, helping to foster an environment of ethical research and innovation at Virginia Tech. The survey will be conducted from September 13, 2021 to October 3, 2021. Starting September 13, NCPRE will send a secure link to the survey to all graduate students, faculty, and staff who are, or have been, involved in research at Virginia Tech. GSBB manages the allocation process of a portion of student activity fees to registered student organizations with a majority membership of graduate and professional students. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ROBOT AND HUMAN CO-ADAPTATION STUDY – 1st posting
We are interested in developing robot teams that can collaborate with humans! Specifically, we want to understand what types of robot teams encourage humans to join in and participate. In this study, you will be working with a team of two robots on a task. You will be asked to control the robots using a joystick. You and the robot will be kept separate at all times (i.e., you will not need to physically interact with the robot). At the end of the study, we will ask you about your experiences. Overall, the study includes both robot interaction and survey activities. We anticipate that the experiments will take a total of 30 minutes. To be eligible, you must be between 18 and 65 years old, and free from any medical conditions that would prevent you from moving and sensing the robot. 17. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENCE-POLICY PROJECT: VECTOR-BORNE DISEASE – 2nd posting
Interested in vector-borne disease, climate change, or science policy more generally? Join the VT Science Policy Education and Advocacy Club’s new interdisciplinary advocacy project to combat either tick or mosquito-borne disease from a natural resource lens. All disciplines welcome you just need an interest in science policy work. We will develop a one-page policy memo for the town of Blacksburg this semester with the possibility of additional memos through other lenses such as hydrology, infrastructure, etc. during spring 2022. 18. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MEDICAID EXPENDITURE IN VIRGINIA SCIENCE POLICY PROJECT – 2nd posting
The Science Policy Education and Advocacy Club (SPEAC) is starting a new project this semester to provide policy recommendations to mitigate the effect of influential factors on Medicaid expenditure in Virginia. Using the All-Payers database and 35 recently discovered influential factors of Medicaid expenditure, we will analyze the existing Virginia code, perform a comparative analysis with laws in other states, and provide recommendations to combat the effect of these influential factors on Medicaid cost in Virginia. No previous policy experience is needed, and all disciplines are welcome. We will develop policy memos for the Commonwealth of Virginia. 19. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION FOCUS GROUP – 2nd posting
Are you interested in participating in a focus group about alternative transportation? This research will help us to gather current information on the use of alternative transportation and the subsequent safety measures used to then develop an educational program for promoting and increasing the safe use of alternative transportation in and around the Virginia Tech campus. 20. PARTICIPANTS WITH PERFECT/CORRECTED NORMAL VISION NEEDED FOR AUGMENTED REALITY STUDY-3rd posting
3D Interaction group in the Sandbox, Moss Art Center, is looking for participants to take part in a user study. We invite you to take part in this research study if you are an English speaker of age 18 years or older with perfect or corrected normal vision (contact lenses are supported). In this experiment, the participants will be asked to access digital information in one of our two contexts: a) a solo context where they are reading a piece of paper, b) a social context where they are talking to someone else (the investigator, in this experiment). The participants will be asked to use one of our three interfaces (a smartphone interface and two Interfaces designed for wearable AR eyeglasses) to access information from a set of mobile applications. The study will be recorded for further analysis. We anticipate that completion of this study will take approximately 75 minutes. Participants who complete the task will be compensated $15 for their work. This study has been approved by Virginia Tech IRB (IRB #21-258).

21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RACE DIFFERENCES IN FOOT LOADING AND ENGAGEMENT STUDY – 3rd posting
The Granata Lab at Virginia Tech is looking for participants in a research study (Protocol 21-479). This research study aims to determine the impact of race and other factors on foot loading and research engagement. Once consented participants will complete three questionnaires and ten walking trials while barefoot. Participation consists of one visit that lasts approximately 30 minutes. Compensation is $10 for full study participation. Eligible participants will be healthy young adults ages 18-30, identify as either African American or White American, have had no injury in the past 6 months that limited physical activity for more than 2 days, have no history of lower extremity surgery, and must be comfortable walking without assistance.
