2. AERIAL CIRCUS DEMONSTRATION AND WORKSHOP – UPDATED TIMES
Monday, February 5, 3-8pm,The Cube at The Moss Arts Center
This is an aerial circus workshop and demonstration with a hands-on portion. Studies suggest aerial circus classes and studios are a safe haven for queer, neurodivergent, and/or bigger bodied people. Currently, Virginia Tech does not offer a space dedicated to physical movement for the student population that is not a traditional gym setting. 8. COMPETING NARRATIVES ABOUT CASTE

Last year, California nearly passed a bill (HB 403) banning caste discrimination in the state. In Maryland, the tallest statue of B. R. Ambedkar, the champion of anti-casteism, was unveiled. How might caste power dynamics operate on a US University campus, including Virginia Tech? Come hear findings from the “What is Caste?” focus groups and interviews conducted on our campus, as well as personal reflections on confronting competing stories about caste. This event is organized by Dr. Ambedkar International Mission (AIM) at Virginia Tech, APIDAs, and the center for Women’s and Gender Studies at Virginia Tech. 18. KIDS’ NIGHT OUT
Free childcare for graduate student families at the VT Women’s Center, 6:30-8:00 on Thursday evenings when classes are in session. Advance sign-up is required, and there are limited spaces. Childcare provided by volunteers from the Chi Delta Alpha sorority, and children must be toilet trained. There will be games, crafts, snacks, maybe a movie, and fun with the sitters! 21. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT GOOGLE SHARED DRIVES – 1st posting
As part of the university’s changes to Google services, Google Shared Drives that have not been claimed by a department will become read-only on Feb. 15 and deleted starting April 3. This includes Shared Drives managed solely by students. It is highly recommended that you download a copy of any files/folders you wish to keep from your Shared Drives. If you are a member of a Shared Drive that a university department needs to maintain, please contact the faculty or staff member most-closely connected to the contents of the drive to discuss how that drive should be managed. 25. ROOTS AND RESETTLEMENT CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS – 2nd posting
We seek creative and thoughtful submissions to feature in a mixed media collection about queer migrations. We invite work that engages with (but not limited to) subject matter related to experiences of LGBTQIA2S+ immigrants, displacement of LGBTQIA2S+ people, migration as a queer phenomenon, and finding a queer sense of belonging in place. Given current global sociopolitical climates, we also invite work that engages with migration of queer folx due to homophobic and transphobic legislation and policies. Moreover, the editors acknowledge that this subject matter might make it difficult for authors to publish using their names, and we can work with you to accommodate this reality. Submissions may include poems, songs, visual art, flash fiction, creative nonfiction, and scholarly statements. One notable submission will receive a cash prize of $500. The Interloper was a student-run queer literary magazine at Virginia Tech that was originally published from 2014 to 2019, and we are looking to get it back up and running! 29. GRA POSITION FOCUSED ON HEALTH PROGRAM EVALUATION – 1st posting
The Institute for Policy and Governance (IPG) is hiring for a full-time (20 hours per week) graduate research assistant to support a USDA grant evaluating the health outcomes of a crisis mental healthcare and substance use recovery center. The position will begin in March 2024, with potential to continue through summer and fall of 2024, and into 2025 depending on student performance and availability. This is a hybrid work opportunity. Previous experience contributing to program evaluations is preferred. Students in public health or related disciplines with professional and/or academic interests in healthcare are strongly encouraged to apply. Conduct literature reviews systematic collection and assessment of academic/gray literature. Assist with quantitative/qualitative data collection/analysis, including IRB protocol development, interview note-taking, thematic coding, descriptive statistics, and analytical writing/reporting. Develop infographics and visual summaries of information based on primary and secondary research for a variety of audiences. The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) is accepting applications for its Graduate Research STEM Fellowship program. A major goal of VSGC is to help produce the engineers and scientists of the future and to promote diversity in the STEM workforce. The consortium provides fellowships of $6,000 in add-on support to graduate students to supplement and enhance basic research support. 34. NIJ GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: APRIL 10, 2024 (grants.gov) and APRIL 17, 2024 (Just Grants)
The National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program supports doctoral research with relevance to criminal or juvenile justice in the United States. This includes criminology, forensic science, technology for law enforcement, and more. Applications from all science and engineering fields are welcome. The fellowship provides up to three years of support within a five-year period and includes: $41,000/year student salary, $16,000/year cost of education allowance, $3,000/year research expenses. 35 SUMMER CUNNINGHAM FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE – DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2024
In combination with the Cunningham Doctoral Scholarship and the Graduate School Annual Fund, we are delighted to announce the availability of summer fellowships in the amount of $7,500 each. This supplement will be awarded as a lump sum fellowship (see note below) at the beginning of the summer. This is a one-time award, cannot be renewed, and is awarded without the expectation of any additional work on your part. Awardees must be current Ph.D. students who are working on their dissertations during the summer months. This award cannot be combined with other Virginia Tech funding sources. Priority will be given to those toward the end of their program. Financial need will be considered as a secondary factor. Applications will be accepted until May 1. Awards will be announced soon thereafter.
NOTE: Fellowships are not considered employment. No taxes are withheld and you will not receive a W2 form at the end of the year. Fellowships will show on your 1098-T from the university and may have to be reported to the IRS on your 1040 form. However, different tax rules apply to international students. 36. RECRUITING FOR RESEARCH STUDY UNDERSTANDING BIOMECHANICAL PERFORMANCE DURING CHILD CARE RELATED ACTIVITIES –  3rd posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting women who have given birth in the last 6 – 12 months and women who have never been pregnant, for a biomechanical performance study (protocol number 22-1085) to explore the effects of lifting and loading a portable car seat. Study participation will involve a single 2-hour visit and includes questionnaires, clinical assessments, and a series of three different lifting and loading conditions. Participant qualifications: between the ages of 18 and 35,  not currently pregnant,  not been diagnosed with a postural stability condition affects balance, a neurologic disorder, no injury in the last two months that limited physical activity for more than two days, no prior serious leg injury or surgery, can perform daily tasks of loading and lifting, had a vaginal delivery in the last 6 months to 1 year and have not experienced a grade 4 perineal tear. The Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation (CFSCT) Graduate Student Learning Circles (GSLC) is seeking graduate students who may be interested in leading a small group conversation around methods. The first GSLC of 2024 will be held on January 31st and will focus on graduate student experiences while identifying, developing, and implementing a methodology. The format for this GSLC will be informal small-group conversations with fellow graduate students around lessons learned while developing their methodology. The goal for this GSLC is for graduate students to learn from each other’s experiences, share resources, answer questions, and build an interdisciplinary community.
