6. LITTLE HOKIE HANGOUT CHILDCARE FACILITY NOW ACCEPTING APLICATIONS – 1st posting

Now accepting applications for the Little Hokie Hangout! The LHH is a new part-day parent cooperative child care program that is run directly across the street from campus. The program director, Mariann Matson, is happy to schedule a time for you to walk through, answer any questions you might have, and provide you with an application form. 7. NEW CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT POLICY EFFECTIVE FALL 2015 – 2nd posting

University Council approved a resolution (2014-15H) which requires graduate students to be continuously enrolled in a minimum of three credit hours in all spring and fall semesters at VT from initial enrollment through graduation. Approved "in absentia" status (resolution 2014-15J) or Cooperative Education Program enrollment also satisfy the continuous enrollment requirement. Graduate students who need to break their continuous enrollment may apply for a leave of absence (resolution 2014-15I) or participate in programs and activities approved by the Graduate School that require absence from the University. Any graduate student failing to remain continuously enrolled without approved leave will be resigned from the University. The registration system for paying comprehensive fees through payroll deduction is now open.  Graduate students on an assistantship must either pay their comprehensive fees or enroll for payroll deductions before the payment deadline.  To enroll in payroll deductions, first register for classes, then login to Hokie SPA, choose University Account Information menu, and click on Graduate Students on Assistantship, enroll in Payroll Deduction. 11. WAGE POSITION OPEN IN GLC: DIGITAL MEDIA CONTENT MANAGER – 1st posting

The incumbent is responsible for managing digital sign, web and Facebook content, including content development and scheduling, screen and software maintenance, website maintenance, and communication and coordination with Grad School and GLC Service Desk staff. The Graduate School is looking for graduate student volunteers (graduate ambassadors) to assist with international graduate student check-in (Aug 3-21), GTA training (Aug 17-18), the Welcome Center and New Graduate Student Orientation in the GLC (Aug 17-21). 13. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR MUSCLE FATIGUE AND RECORVERY STUDY – 1st posting

Volunteers are sought for dissertation research study about the effects of different physical demands on muscle fatigue. Participants will perform a set of tasks, requiring forceful exertions of the hand, forearm, and/or upper arm.  Muscular strength will be measured by voluntary contraction and electrical stimulation of muscles.  Other measures will be related to performance and muscle fatigue by monitoring the muscle activity using EMG electrodes. Experiments will be conducted in the Safety Engineering Laboratory in the ISE department. The complete experiment involves up to 7 experimental sessions, each requiring about 4 hours. Participants are paid $10/hour and a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Must be age 18-30;  males and females; no current or recent history of a physical disorder affecting the hand/arm; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week). 15. MILITARY VETERANS SOUGHT FOR COMMUNITY INTEGRATION STUDY – 2nd posting

Male veterans, age 18-26, with PTSD are invited to participate in a study about technology for veterans to assist them with integration into their community after military service. Participation involves completing a short background workbook and then attending an interview session that is audio-recorded. Participation could range between 30 minutes and 2 hours and participants will be compensated $15/hr. VT’s Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) walk-in consulting will be available until Aug 14. A statistical consultant is available 1:00-3:00pm Monday through Friday when classes are in session to answer quick questions or to help with research projects requiring less than 30 minutes of assistance. 13. GA OPENING IN THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING FOR 2015-16 – 1st posting
The College of Engineering Dean’s Office is accepting applications for a FT (20 hrs/wk) graduate assistantship for the 2015-16 academic year. The GA will be working with the Learning Services Specialist on specific tasks and duties, including working with Distance Learning Specialist to implement strategies to develop a sense of community among off-campus students, update and manage website related to distance learning sense of community in the College of Engineering, create and maintain relationships with students off the Blacksburg campus, answer student inquiries- working in conjunction with the Learning Services Specialist. 17. CHILDREN WITH FREQUENT TANTRUMS/TEMPER OUTBURSTS SOUGHT FOR TREATMENT STUDY – 2nd posting
Children ages 8-12 are currently being enrolled for a free treatment study for frequent tantrums/temper outbursts and chronic irritability. The treatment is designed to teach children to regulate their emotions, and will be conducted in 13 weekly sessions. Families will also receive $70 for completing assessment sessions for the study. 18. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR GEOSPATIAL DATA RESEARCH STUDY – 2nd posting
5-15 participants sought for a month-long research study focusing on the question “how might we provide mobile users with a way to explore, interact with, and analyze their personal geospatial data.” Participants will be optionally given an Android device to interact with and visualize their personal location-based data and will be asked to complete one 15-minute survey per week for four weeks to give investigators insight on their use of the application. At the end of the four-week study, you will be asked to participate in a 30-minute interview and return the device. Participation is voluntary and all data collected will be confidential. 5-15 participants sought for a month-long research study focusing on the question “how might we provide mobile users with a way to explore, interact with, and analyze their personal geospatial data.” Participants will be optionally given an Android device to interact with and visualize their personal location-based data and will be asked to complete one 15-minute survey per week for four weeks to give investigators insight on their use of the application. At the end of the four-week study, you will be asked to participate in a 30-minute interview and return the device. Participation is voluntary and all data collected will be confidential. 10. SUMMER II QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS COURSE OFFERED – 3rd posting
The Educational Research and Evaluation program offers EDRE 6605: Quantitative Research Methods I in Summer 2, taught by Dr. Chosang Tendhar. EDRE 6605 is the first of a two-semester, year-long sequence, designed to provide an overview of basic research design, measurement, and statistical concepts in social and behavioral research. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the process of social and educational research in field settings, hands-on experience of designing and conducting research, and analysis of data. This doctoral level introductory research method course is usually taken by graduate students from departments such as business, psychology, sociology, education, and human development. Participants will perform a set of tasks, requiring forceful exertions of the hand, forearm, and/or upper arm. Other measures will be related to performance and muscle fatigue by monitoring the muscle activity using EMG electrodes. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to respond to an online questionnaire expected to last between 30 to 45 minutes. Based on your responses to the measures, you may or may not be contacted for participation in the second portion of the study, where you would be in a lab for approximately 1.5-2 hours. 10. MOTHERS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON STRESS MANAGEMENT AND HEALTHY EATING – 3rd  posting
Participation in this study involves attending four weekly meetings lasting 1.5 hours, a focus group, and a phone interview four weeks later. Participants will be asked to fill out surveys about their eating behavior and experience of stress at the beginning and end of the study, along with saliva samples and body measurements. The weekly sessions will focus on managing stress, slowing down, and healthy food. The focus group and interview will help researchers learn more about your experience in the program. Eligibility requirements: must be a mother 18 or older with a child 5 years or younger living in your home; not currently pregnant or breastfeeding; not participating in a weight loss program or diet. Participants will receive $10-85 based on level of participation. Date and time of program will be determined upon convenience for majority of participants.
