Go to the Starlite Drive-In with fellow grads to see Iron Man 2. Admissions is $5 per person. Meet outside the GLC on Otey St. at 7:15pm. Bring your own movie snacks and chairs. 3. GSA SUMMER EVENTS ON GOOGLE CALENDAR AND FACEBOOK
The GSA is excited to bring you a summer of fun in the ‘Burg! Visit the Google Calendar on the GSA Website (http://www.gsa.uusa.vt.edu) for upcoming events, including trips to the New River, Summer Wine Social, and the annual Welcome Back BBQ! You can also join the GSA Facebook group page (search: VT Graduate Student Assembly) to get up-to-date info for events. Details of each event will be sent out in the weekly GSA and Graduate School announcements and posted on the Facebook page. Send questions to the VP of Programs, Amanda Cronin Rumore.
4. GRAD STUDENT LEADERS SOUGHT FOR LEADERSHIP TECH
The Department of Student Activities is seeking 9 graduate students to serve as small group facilitators for an undergraduate leadership development program, Leadership Tech Engaging Leadership, to help students develop their potential for responsible citizenship and leadership through community service and other experiential learning activities. Facilitators will work in teams of two or three to guide a group of 10-15 junior and/or senior students organized around environmental sustainability; social justice; multiculturalism; global issues; health and wellness; community vitality. If interested, submit your resume and complete the application. An interview will be scheduled for those who meet the minimum qualifications. For more information, contact Allison Dunn, 540-231-8628.
5. GRAD STUDENT ELIGIBILITY FOR SUMMER HEALTH SERVICES
- Graduate students enrolled in both Summer Session I and II, continued eligibility for service at Schiffert and Cook Centers is maintained throughout summer, as a two-term fee is assessed as part of enrollment ($160 for summer of 2010).
- Graduate students enrolled only in Summer I or Summer II, only a single session fee is charged ($80 in 2010) but also only a single session of coverage is provided. However, students may purchase health service coverage for the rest of summer by paying an additional $80 at the Schiffert Health Center.
- Continuing graduate students who do not take classes in the summer but who work towards their degree on campus or in the environs can elect summer health service coverage by paying the full summer fee ($160 in 2010) and be eligible for health services at Schiffert and Cook for the period that runs from the end of spring to the beginning of fall (when comprehensive fee billing resumes).
- Continuing graduate students can also elect to pay a day fee (in 2010, $59 per visit) for service. For a person who will use Schiffert Health Center and Cook Counseling Center no more than twice together, the day fee is cost effective. However, if one will use Schiffert and/or Cook more than twice, it is a better value to pay the summer health fee.
6. 2010 GSA EVENTS CHAIR COMMITTEE – 2nd posting
If you have enjoyed GSA events in the past and have wanted to become more involved, then this is your opportunity: the GSA is looking for students who would like to be part of the GSA Events Committee. The committee will be involved in developing new events and helping to make sure the events are a success. If you are interested, please contact the GSA Events Chair, Jay Pembridge.
7. GSA-GPSF LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS – 2nd posting
The GSA is looking for volunteers to serve on the committee for its largest fundraising event, the 2010 GSA Graduate and Professional School Fair (GPSF). The 2010 GPSF will be on Sep 27, 2010, hosting graduate and professional schools from around the country. In order to increase the quality of the event, a small group of volunteers are needed to help with everything from updating the database of schools to helping with management on the day of the event. You do not have to be in Blacksburg during the summer to help- there are plenty of jobs which can be completed remotely. Please email the GPSF Chairs, Atieh Haghdoost and Mehdi Kargar, if you are interested in serving on the GPSF Committee.
8. SUMMER WIRELESS ACCESS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS – 2nd posting
Graduate students who have lost their wireless access on campus should go to the Student Telecommunications office in the Student Services Building to sign up in person (online sign up will not work during summer). Graduate students do not need sponsorship from their advisors to get wireless access over the summer. 9. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR SMARTPHONE USE STUDY- 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study of “Mobile Information in Everyday Human Activity” to explore how smartphone users look up and capture information with their devices in their everyday activities. The study consists of three parts, including a short questionnaire, a diary study, and a follow-up interview. Two $25 gift cards will be raffled off for the diary study among active participants and if you participate in the follow-up interview you get a $10 gift card. To qualify you must be at least 18 years old, own and use a qualified smartphone for at least 6 months, and have an unlimited data plan from your wireless provider. 10. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR SOUND LOCALIZATION STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a sound localization study: the experiment has one screening session and one experimental session. The screening session will last around 30 minutes while the experimental session will last around 60 minutes. Participants will be compensated $8 per hour.
