1. WEEKLY SERVICES IN THE GLC
Weekly services are on hiatus for the summer, except for GLC Café and Statistical Consulting:

  • GLC Café: 3:30-5:00 every Thursday (morning cafés are cancelled due to lack of interest), Reading Room
  • Statistical consulting by LISA: Weekdays, 1:00-3:00pm, GLC Videoconference Room

2. FREE SUMMER YOGA IN THE GLC
Mondays and Wednesdays 12:00-1:00pm, GLC Multipurpose Room
Yoga will be on Mondays and Wednesdays in the GLC Multipurpose Room, starting on Monday, Jun 18 through second summer. Yoga WILL NOT be held on the following dates: Jul 4, 11, 16, 18 and Aug 13. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mat, water, towel, strap, or any props they want. Some yoga mats may be checked out at the Information Desk while supplies last. Any changes to the schedule or other details will be announced on this listserv.

3. GLC CAFÉ PM

Thursday, Jul 5, 3:30-5:00pm, GLC Reading Room   
The GLC Café continues throughout the summer with coffee and tea in the wonderful company of your graduate-student and Grad-School colleagues. Bring your own mug if you can.  Free coffee, tea and light snacks provided every week. Morning café has been cancelled for now due to lack of sufficient interest.

4. SUMMER SHORT COURSES IN STATS

LISA (Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) is providing a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. – July 16: Designing Surveys and Interpreting the Results*;
– July 17: Introduction to R, Part I;
– July 19: Introduction to R, Part II;
– July 23 & 26: Fixed Effects, Random Effects, and Correlated Data;
*This course will be held in Fralin Auditorium

5. DOCTORAL GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP OPENING FOR AY 2012-13 – 2nd posting

Doctoral Graduate Assistant required for Fall 2012-Spring 2013, 20 hrs/wk, standard assistantship benefit pkg. This assistantship will provide academic and program support to the music education program leader, Department of Teaching and Learning. The successful applicant will have demonstrated success with open-source journal construction and maintenance, demonstrated success with  journal proof reading and manuscript editing/writing in English, experience with managing and maintaining professional organization websites, proven success with publishing programs such as Publisher, OpenOffice, iWork Pages, experience with using Flip Cam and moving video files from camera to laptops, experience navigating web searches and online survey applications, and a positive and engaged disposition with regard to learning new technology and work-arounds. 6. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BALANCE AND GAIT STUDY – 1st posting
Subjects are needed for a study investigating balance and gait in overweight individuals. The study will take place in the Kevin P Granata Biomechanics Lab in 208 Norris Hall. The study will take 1-1.5 hours to complete, and subjects will be paid $20 for their participation. Overweight individuals are especially needed.

7. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR READING PRACTICES STUDY – 1st posting

Participants are needed for a study investigating reading practices on different media (i.e., paper, computer, iPad). This study will take around 3 hours to complete and participants will be compensated $10/hour (total $30). Requirements: Native English speaker, age 30-70. 8. CHINESE MALE STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS NEEDED FOR STUDY – 2nd posting
A VT doctoral student in human development is conducting a study to learn about how Chinese male international students and scholars construct their sense of being a man and their intimate relationships. In this IRB-approved study subjects will take part in an interview that takes approximately 30-60 minutes.  The information provided by the participants will be held confidential. Your name will not be associated with any study results. Participants must be Chinese male, 18 or older, hold F-1, J-1, or H-1 visa, and been in the United States for at least 6 months. 9. ANKLE INSTABILITY STUDY – 2nd posting
Healthy, young adults with and without a history of ankle sprains are sought for participation in a research project on ankle-sprain risk factors.  The project consists of two (2) studies of which participants may complete one or both.  These studies will require participants to perform single leg drop landings before and after fatigue (STUDY 1), and complete ankle stiffness and position sense evaluations under fatigued and braced conditions (STUDY 2).  All procedures have been approved by the VT-IRB. Must be 18-35 years old, active (exercise 2-3 times/wk), have no existing joint problems or chronic joint pain, and must not be participating in physical rehab or regularly using ankle tape or bracing. 10. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR SLIP AND FALL RISK STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are needed for a study assessing the effect of localized muscle fatigue on slip and fall risks. The study consists of 4 experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2-2.5 hours).  Participants will be compensated $10/hour with a $40 bonus after completing all sessions. Requirements: male or female, age 21-84, no recent history of musculoskeletal disorders. If interested, please contact Xuefang Wu at xfwu@vt.edu for further details.

11. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SUMMER WINE SOCIAL – 3rd posting
Be a part of the action! The Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) is looking for volunteers to make this year’s Summer Wine Social a hit. This summer event fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Jul 14 at the University Club. Volunteers may sign up for a 2 hour or longer shift to assist with set-up, ID check, entry fee collection, wine pouring, food prep, and more. Free food and entry provided for all volunteers. 12. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS AND ANGER STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a research study about young women’s anger in romantic relationships.  Participants must be women 18-25 years old living in the New River Valley and currently involved in a romantic relationship for at least 4 months. 13. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON HISTORIC BATTLEFIELDS" – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a survey on the public education and perception of historic battlefields among the VT community. As a potential participant, your opinions may be important. Your involvement is entirely voluntary and there are no known or anticipated risks by participating in this study. The survey should take less than 20 minutes and you will receive $5.00 as compensation.
