Weekly services are on hiatus for the summer, except for GLC Café and Statistical Consulting:

2. GLC CAFÉ PM

The GLC Café continues throughout the summer with coffee and tea in the wonderful company of your graduate-student and Grad-School colleagues. Bring your own mug if you can.  Free coffee, tea and light snacks provided every week. Morning café has been cancelled for now due to lack of sufficient interest.

3. NEW FALL COURSE: GRAD 5214, DIVERSITY FOR GLOBAL SOCIETY
Taught by Grad School Dean Karen DePauw, this course examines research and scholarship on diversity and inclusion for a global society from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Learn how your discipline is affected by global issues. This course is offered this fall on Tuesdays from 6-9pm in GLC Room C.

4. SUMMER SHORT COURSES IN STATS

LISA (Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) is providing a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. – July 17: Introduction to R, Part I;
– July 19: Introduction to R, Part II;
– July 23 & 26: Fixed Effects, Random Effects, and Correlated Data;
*This course will be held in Fralin Auditorium

5. GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP AND WAGE OPENING AT LIBRARY REFERENCE DESKS – 2nd posting
Library has assistantship position for SciTech Reference Desk in Newman Library for academic year, 2012-13, 20 hrs/week Sun through Thu, 6:00pm to 10:00pm.  Hourly wage positions available for Reference Library Assistants for SciTech Reference and Business, Humanities, and Social Science desks. Will include some nights and weekend shifts.  Hours will be negotiated upon hire.  Please submit a cover letter, resume, and the completed application and send as attachment by email to Brenda Hendricks. 6. WAGE POSITION OPENING IN GRAD SCHOOL/GLC: DIGITAL MEDIA CONTENT MANAGER – 2nd posting

A digital screen, GLC website and Facebook page are used to communicate information, services, events and timely updates to graduate students and GLC patrons. The incumbent is responsible for managing digital sign- and web content, including content development and scheduling, screen and software maintenance, website maintenance, and communication and coordination with Grad School and GLC Information Desk staff. Must be FT grad student, have experience with any of the following software applications: Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash, Photoshop, MS PP, MS Paint, Samsung MagicNet Pro, flash converters. Web maintenance experience preferred. Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment. Knowledge of services, programs and events offered in the GLC is preferred. Submit cover letter and resume to grads@vt.edu. Position open until filled. Anticipated starting date: Jul 23. $12/hr.

7. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BALANCE AND GAIT STUDY – 3rd posting

Subjects are needed for a study investigating balance and gait in overweight individuals. The study will take place in the Kevin P Granata Biomechanics Lab in 208 Norris Hall. The study will take 1-1.5 hours to complete, and subjects will be paid $20 for their participation. If you are interested, please email your name, age, height, weight and days/times during the week you are available to participate to: biomechanics.esm@gmail.com. Overweight individuals are especially needed.

8. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR READING PRACTICES STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a study investigating reading practices on different media (i.e., paper, computer, iPad). This study will take around 3 hours to complete and participants will be compensated $10/hour (total $30). Requirements: Native English speaker, age 30-70. Bring a book or books that you have read and are willing to give away, and take a book or books that others have read and recommend!  This could be a great opportunity to pick up some fun summer reads other than your text books and professional journal articals.
